On June 21, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung appointed five new senior aides at the Presidential Office, in a move aimed at strengthening the executive team as the administration enters its second year in office.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in South Korea, speaking at a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Seoul, Chief of Staff Kang Hoon Sik said the new personnel were selected to realize President Lee's administrative goals in the coming period.
Seong Ghi Hong, former Chairman and CEO of Yonhap News Agency, has been appointed Senior Secretary for Public Relations and Communications. Former senior prosecutor Han Chan Sik will serve as Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs and is expected to play a role in promoting reforms within the prosecution system.
In the social sector, Kim Kyoung Ja, former Vice President of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, has been appointed Senior Secretary for Social Affairs.
Regarding national security, former army commander Kang Gun Jark was appointed as the First Deputy National Security Advisor, while Song Ki Ho, currently in charge of economic security at the Presidential Office, was appointed as the Third Deputy National Security Advisor.
The personnel reshuffle is taking place amid signs of declining support for President Lee following the local elections on June 3rd.
A Realmeter poll released on June 15 showed that Lee's approval rating reached 51.5%, down from 60.5% recorded in mid-May.
Meanwhile, a survey by Jowon C&I showed his approval rating at 47.7%, lower than the disapproval rating, for the first time since he took office in June 2025.
Observers believe that the restructuring of the senior aide team reflects President Lee's efforts to strengthen governance efficiency and enhance coordination in implementing the government 's policy priorities in the coming period.
