Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol did not recognize the investigation but agreed to participate in questioning to avoid bloodshed.

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol released a video statement about his arrest on the morning of January 15. Investigators from the Office of the Chief Corruption Investigation (CIO) raided Yoon's residence in Yongsan District, central Seoul, this morning to execute an arrest warrant as part of an investigation into the imposition of martial law late last year.

"To prevent unfortunate incidents and violence, I decided to appear before the CIO even though I believe the investigation is illegal," Yoon said in a video filmed at his residence, according to Yonhap.

Investigators arrested Yoon on charges of rebellion related to the declaration of martial law. He was the first sitting president of South Korea to be arrested.

Mr. Yoon's side has rejected the allegations and does not recognize the legality of the investigation, arguing that the CIO lacks jurisdiction.

Yoon expressed regret over what he called the "illegal and invalid" process involved in issuing arrest warrants. "The rule of law has completely collapsed in this country. Although I am facing disadvantages, I sincerely hope that no citizen will have to suffer injustice in future criminal cases," said Yoon, a former chief prosecutor of South Korea.

Mr. Yoon also thanked his supporters and said his final words before leaving his residence: "I will fight with the people to the very end."

On January 3, investigators attempted to execute an arrest warrant but were obstructed by agents of the Presidential Security Service (PSS) and soldiers guarding the compound. This time, investigators encountered only minor difficulties from protesters supporting Yoon outside the leader's residence.

Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol may be detained for up to 48 hours, and investigators may request an extension of the detention period.
