The Toyota Highlander will become an all-electric SUV starting in 2026.
Toyota is undergoing a major transformation in the North American market with a strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio, refresh its hybrid models, and prepare for the launch of the 2026 Toyota Highlander EV.

The centerpiece of this "overhaul" is the Toyota Highlander – the popular SUV that is expected to become an all-electric vehicle from early 2026. It is currently unclear whether the Highlander EV will use an entirely new EV platform or continue to rely on the TNGA-K architecture like previous hybrid models.
However, Toyota has confirmed that it will not launch a hybrid version of this generation in North America, focusing instead on the all-electric model. Highlander sales in 2025 have fallen by more than 50% compared to the same period, while Grand Highlander – the larger version launched in 2023 – is expected to grow by nearly 20%. The Grand Highlander is expected to continue with internal combustion engines and receive a mid-cycle refresh in 2027.
Not stopping at the Highlander, Toyota has several other EV models in the works. Automotive News reports that the company will restart its large, three-row electric SUV project – inspired by the bZ5X concept introduced in 2021.
This new electric SUV model is expected to go into production starting in 2028 at Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky plant. In terms of size, it's comparable to the Grand Highlander but in a higher-end segment. Meanwhile, the company's best-selling model – the RAV4 – has entered a new generation for 2026. Other SUVs such as the 4Runner and Land Cruiser will be refreshed before 2028. Despite market trends leaning towards SUVs and pickup trucks, Toyota continues to invest in sedans. A completely new all-electric sedan could launch in 2027, likely inspired by the Chinese market – like the bZ7.
Meanwhile, current sedan models will maintain their development paths: the Corolla has just been refreshed for 2026; the Camry has no upgrade plans until 2028; and the hydrogen-powered Mirai will continue in its current form. The Crown fastback sedan is expected to receive a facelift in 2026. Video : The 2026 Toyota Highlander EV electric SUV is revealed.
