Proposed project worth nearly 3 trillion VND to resolve traffic congestion.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has submitted a document to the City People's Committee proposing the investment plan for upgrading and expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and constructing a new Tan Thuan 1 bridge. The project has an estimated total investment of approximately 2,950 billion VND, aiming to alleviate serious traffic congestion on this vital route connecting the city center with the southern area.

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is one of the major traffic arteries connecting the central area of Ho Chi Minh City to the southern part of the city (District 7).

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, located in Xom Chieu Ward (District 4), currently has only 4 lanes and is frequently overloaded, causing difficulties for traffic. This is an important road, responsible for connecting traffic from the city center to the south of the city.

Details of the infrastructure upgrade plan.

According to the proposal, the project will focus on the following main items:

  • Nguyen Tat Thanh Road expansion: The section from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge, approximately 2.5 km long, will be expanded to 6-8 lanes.
  • Construction of the Hoang Dieu underpass: An underpass with a minimum of 4 lanes will be built at the Hoang Dieu intersection to reduce traffic congestion.
  • New Tan Thuan 1 Bridge to be built: The existing bridge, which is over 120 years old, has exceeded its lifespan and no longer ensures safe load capacity. It will be replaced with a new, more modern bridge.
The existing Tan Thuan 1 and Tan Thuan 2 bridges span the Te Canal.
The Tan Thuan 1 Bridge (right), over 120 years old, will be rebuilt to ensure safety and traffic capacity. Next to it is the Tan Thuan sluice gate, part of the 10 trillion VND flood control project.

The Department of Construction has proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assign the Department of Finance to advise on capital allocation and designate the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Transportation Works as the investor, with the intention of commencing investment preparation steps in October 2025.

Traffic congestion on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is caused by the narrow road and high volume of vehicles.
The Nguyen Tat Thanh road currently has only 4 lanes and is frequently congested due to the extremely high volume of traffic.

A vision for integrated planning along the Saigon River.

The Nguyen Tat Thanh road expansion project is part of the overall development plan for the spatial layout, transportation, and technical infrastructure of the Saigon riverside area, from Ba Son Bridge to Thu Thiem 4 Bridge.

The densely populated residential areas are located in Vinh Hoi, Khanh Hoi, and Xom Chieu wards, District 4.
The area encompassing Vinh Hoi, Khanh Hoi, and Xom Chieu wards (District 4) is one of the most densely populated areas in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Department of Construction also recommended that the city assign the Department of Planning and Architecture to organize an architectural design competition for the area on the west bank of the Saigon River (from Ba Son Bridge to Vietnam International Container Port). This aims to adjust related planning projects, towards creating a modern, friendly, and sustainable riverside urban space.

This plan will be considered in conjunction with other large-scale infrastructure projects in the area, including:

  • Thu Thiem 3 Bridge and Thu Thiem 4 Bridge: Both bridges are 6-lane bridges, connecting the city center with the Thu Thiem New Urban Area and the southern part of the city.
  • Tramway Line: A tramway line along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street will be integrated into the overall landscape plan.
  • Other projects include TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) projects, international passenger ports, inland waterway terminals, and river embankment projects.
The area where the Thu Thiem 3 bridge is planned to be built currently consists of factories and industrial plants.
