Proposed project of nearly 3,000 billion VND to solve traffic jams

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has sent a document to the City People's Committee proposing an investment policy for the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and build a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge. The project has a total estimated investment of about VND2,950 billion, aiming to solve the serious traffic congestion on the main road connecting the city center with the South.

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is one of the traffic axes with high traffic volume, connecting the central area of Ho Chi Minh City to the South of the city (District 7).

Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, located in Xom Chieu Ward (District 4), currently has only 4 lanes and is often overloaded, causing difficulties for movement. This is an important route, shouldering the task of connecting traffic from the center to the South of the city.

Detailed planning for infrastructure upgrades

As proposed, the project will focus on the following main items:

  • Expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh Street: The section from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge, with a length of about 2.5 km, will be expanded to a scale of 6 - 8 lanes.
  • Construction of Hoang Dieu underpass: An underpass with a minimum scale of 4 lanes will be built at Hoang Dieu intersection to reduce traffic conflicts.
  • Construction of new Tan Thuan 1 bridge: The existing bridge has existed for more than 120 years, exceeded its service life and no longer ensures load safety, and will be replaced with a new, more modern bridge.
The existing Tan Thuan 1 and Tan Thuan 2 bridges cross the Te canal.
Tan Thuan 1 Bridge (right) is over 120 years old and will be rebuilt to ensure safety and traffic capacity. Next to it is the Tan Thuan culvert, part of the 10,000 billion VND flood prevention project.

The Department of Construction proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assign the Department of Finance to advise on capital allocation and assign the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Traffic Works to be the investor, with the investment preparation steps expected to be implemented in October 2025.

Vision of synchronous planning along Saigon River

The Nguyen Tat Thanh Street expansion project is part of the overall development orientation of space, traffic and technical infrastructure of the Saigon River area, from Ba Son Bridge to Thu Thiem 4 Bridge.

Densely populated areas in Vinh Hoi, Khanh Hoi and Xom Chieu wards, District 4.
The area of Vinh Hoi, Khanh Hoi and Xom Chieu wards (District 4) is one of the most densely populated areas in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Department of Construction also proposed that the city assign the Department of Planning and Architecture to organize a competition for architectural plans for the West bank of the Saigon River (from Ba Son Bridge to Vietnam International Container Port). This is to adjust related planning projects, aiming to form a modern, friendly and sustainable riverside urban space.

This planning will be considered in conjunction with other large-scale infrastructure projects in the area, including:

  • Thu Thiem 3 Bridge and Thu Thiem 4 Bridge: Both bridges have a scale of 6 lanes, connecting the central area with Thu Thiem New Urban Area and the South of the city.
  • Tramway Line (ground train): A tram line along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street will be integrated into the overall landscape planning.
  • Other projects: Including TOD development projects, international passenger ports, inland waterway terminals and riverside embankments.
The area where Thu Thiem 3 bridge is planned to be built is currently filled with factories and plants.
The area where Thu Thiem 3 Bridge is planned to be built is currently occupied by factories and plants. Along with this project, Ton Dan Street will also be expanded.

These projects, when completed, are expected to complete the modern traffic network, reduce traffic congestion and promote socio -economic development for the entire southern region of Ho Chi Minh City.
