The Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City emphasized that modern industry and innovation must be the pillars leading the megacity of over 14 million people into a new era of development.

According to him, the merger of Ho Chi Minh City with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau has created a new economic and administrative entity of outstanding scale: an area of ​​over 6,770 km², a population of over 14 million people, and nearly 50% of the country's private enterprises.

This is not just an expansion of "physical space," but a golden opportunity for Ho Chi Minh City to redefine its role as the leading engine, becoming the top growth pole of the country and reaching regional prominence.

However, he also pointed out the challenges as the industrial sector's share in GRDP is trending downward, with many industries still relying on cheap labor and having low technological content and added value.

Transforming the industrial model cannot be delayed.

To "transform potential into action," the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested that departments and agencies immediately begin implementing a series of tasks after the seminar.

The Department of Industry and Trade is urgently compiling all opinions from the seminar and proposing adjustments to the industrial planning to prioritize high-tech, green, foundational, digital transformation, smart, and green industries, focusing on mechanical engineering, chemicals, electronics, semiconductors, high-speed rail, etc.

The Department of Science and Technology is tasked with promoting the innovation ecosystem, connecting research institutes, universities, and businesses, and supporting technology startups.

The Department of Finance is studying incentive mechanisms to attract investment into key industries and new technologies.

The Department of Internal Affairs and the Department of Education and Training focus on training high-quality human resources that closely match the practical needs of businesses.

The management boards of export processing zones and industrial parks are accelerating administrative procedure reforms and developing green and smart industrial park models linked to regional logistics. In addition, research institutes and universities are encouraged to participate directly in technology transfer, product development, training, and policy critique.

The business community is also urged to proactively innovate technology, invest in green industries, improve productivity, and strictly adhere to environmental and labor standards.

Regarding the opinions and suggestions from businesses, Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu stated that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, together with Tuoi Tre newspaper, has launched the program "Contributing Ideas for the Development of Ho Chi Minh City's Industry," inviting businesses, researchers, and citizens to contribute ideas and solutions to build a modern, green, and sustainable industrial sector.

According to Mr. Vu, there will be more than a month spent listening to business proposals and suggestions, which will then be compiled as a reference to present a plan for industrial development to the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

"With a proactive spirit, a sense of responsibility, and a desire for innovation, Ho Chi Minh City is ready to enter a new cycle of industrial growth, not only as a 'locomotive' in the country but also as a driving force for the entire region," Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu emphasized.
