After many years of construction, in January 2025, the Hang Bang canal section (the 250-meter section passing through District 5) was inaugurated. This section is part of the Hang Bang canal renovation project (phase 2) through District 5 and District 6.

However, to date, the remaining section of phase 2 (from Ngo Nhan Tinh Street to Mai Xuan Thuong Street) has not been completed, hindering the clearing of the waterway and environmental improvement due to land acquisition issues. This 500-meter section is a "bottleneck," preventing the refreshing green canal from flowing seamlessly.
The Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Construction Project Management Board for Transportation Works (Transportation Board), the project's investor, stated that the second phase of the Hang Bang Canal project has now reached 80% completion.
The current obstacle is the land compensation and clearance process, as 19 households (behind Binh Tay Market) have not yet received compensation and handed over their land, and have filed complaints in multiple places.

Specifically, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned the District 6 People's Committee - the District 6 Compensation and Land Clearance Board (now merged into the Binh Tien Ward Investment and Construction Project Management Board) as the investor to organize the compensation and land clearance. Afterward, the local authorities handed over the land to the Transportation Department to organize the construction contractor.
Currently, the Compensation and Land Clearance Council for the Hang Bang Canal renovation project (phase 2) and the mobilization teams of Binh Tay ward are actively contacting, persuading, and convincing the remaining 19 households within the project's adjusted boundary to hand over the land behind their houses to facilitate construction.

According to a report from the Binh Tien Ward Investment and Construction Project Management Board, the compensation and land clearance project for the Hang Bang Canal (phase 2) in the former District 6 area, which was approved a long time ago (in 2018), now needs adjustment and faces difficulties and obstacles that need to be resolved.

The Binh Tien Ward Project Management Board aims to complete and hand over the construction site by the fourth quarter of 2026. The Transportation Department will complete the construction within four months of receiving the full site.
The Hang Bang canal, over 1.7 km long, runs through the former District 5 and District 6. Its starting point intersects with the Tan Hoa - Lo Gom canal, and its end point intersects with the Van Tuong - Tau Hu canal. This drainage canal has been severely polluted, impacting the environment and the lives of residents in the area.
The Hang Bang canal renovation project is divided into 3 phases, phase 1 (from Binh Tien road to Tan Hoa - Lo Gom canal) was completed in 2019.
Phase 2 is 750 meters long. Of this, the 500-meter section from Mai Xuan Thuong Street to Ngo Nhan Tinh Street has a construction cost of approximately 67 billion VND, and the land compensation and clearance cost is approximately 1,182 billion VND.
The 250-meter section from Ngo Nhan Tinh Street to Van Tuong Canal has a construction cost of approximately 33 billion VND, and the land compensation and clearance cost is approximately 600 billion VND.
Phase 3 of the project, from Mai Xuan Thuong Street to Binh Tien (730 m long), has a total investment of approximately 2,400 billion VND, involves the complete relocation of 391 households, and is scheduled for completion between now and 2028.
