Two Vietnamese destinations, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, are leading the search trends for Thai tourists during this long holiday period in early May.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Bangkok, data from the online booking platform Agoda shows that Ho Chi Minh City recorded the highest search growth in Thailand, at 134%, followed by Da Nang with a 58% increase.
Other destinations such as Hong Kong (China) recorded more modest increases.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), although domestic tourism demand during the May 1-4 holiday tended to decrease due to rising living and energy costs, Thai people's plans for overseas travel remained largely unchanged.
This is a factor contributing to the increased number of searches for international destinations, with Vietnam emerging as a top choice.
According to the Director-General of TAT, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, domestic tourism is projected to decline due to people tightening their spending, especially after the Songkran holiday last month, along with the impact of hot weather and thunderstorms in some areas.
TAT estimates that domestic tourism in Thailand during this period will generate approximately 10.1 billion baht (over 307 million USD), with 2.83 million visitors and a hotel occupancy rate of around 64%.
Popular domestic destinations include Kanchanaburi, Chon Buri, Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Chachoengsao.
A study by the Tourism Council of Thailand found that only about 16-28% of people planned to travel during this holiday, mostly for short trips back to their hometowns or nearby areas.
Approximately 12-20% plan to travel for a day trip, while 2-6% choose to stay overnight, and only 2% will travel between regions.
