Surprisingly, Tra Su is an artificially planted forest, formed thanks to the diligent and honest hands of the people in this saline, acidic soil region. Today, Tra Su is located in Tinh Bien district, An Giang province, only about 10km from the Vietnam-Cambodia border. Starting in the early 1980s, the area was still barren land, heavily acidic, and unsuitable for any cultivation or livestock. Through the efforts of the local government and the hard work of the people, a project to combat acidity, reforest, and prevent flooding was established. Thirty years later, Tra Su has been recognized as a special-use forest and a typical year-round flooded forest area in the western part of the Hau River region.
