Responsibility behind the glitz and glamour of art

In the world of art, talent is a prerequisite for an artist to perform on the public stage. But to remain in the hearts of the audience for a long time, talent alone is not enough.

After memorable roles, songs, or works, what keeps an artist strong for many years is not only their professional ability but also their character, civic consciousness, and responsibility to society.

In recent days, public opinion has been stirred up by the arrest of several artists for involvement with banned substances. What the public regrets is not so much the potential collapse of some individuals' careers, but rather the fact that some of them were once considered talented figures in the cultural and entertainment world, who held a special place in the hearts of the audience and had a bright artistic future ahead of them.

The public rarely develops affection for an artist after just a few minutes on stage. Affection is often built up over a lifetime, memories, and empathy. Some fans travel hundreds of kilometers just to bring their favorite food to an artist. Long lines of fans endure the sun and rain for hours just to see their beloved artist in person. A single song can become a cherished memory for an entire generation. A great performance can sometimes provide motivation for others during their most difficult times.

That sentiment makes artists "public figures" in the truest sense. The title isn't simply about glamour; it also comes with immense responsibility to society. The public may accept individuality, difference, and even rebellion in artistic creation. However, the public finds it very difficult to accept celebrities disregarding the law or basic moral standards. An artist may be talented and have a large fan base, but if they choose a deviant lifestyle, sacrificing civic responsibility to chase personal temptations, they are eroding their own reputation and career. Some mistakes can be corrected over time, but some missteps can cause audiences to turn their backs on them forever.

From another perspective, the series of incidents also shows that the current entertainment environment is fraught with pressure and temptation. The glamour, the rapid rise to fame, the attention of social media, or the lax lifestyle of some in the entertainment industry can cause some artists to gradually lose self-control. However, pressure or temptation cannot be a reason to justify breaking the law. The more influential a person is, the more aware they must be of the limits they are not allowed to cross.

This reality also necessitates building a healthy cultural environment where talent is always accompanied by responsibility. At the conference on disseminating the "Code of Conduct for Culture in the Digital Environment" held on May 22nd in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Le Quang Tu Do, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), mentioned two concepts: "white list" and "black list" for artists. Accordingly, artists with a positive image will be recommended for priority cooperation in performance, promotion, and media programs; conversely, those on the "black list" will be advised to limit cooperation for a certain period of time.

As the country's largest entertainment industry center, Ho Chi Minh City is also promoting the dissemination of positive images of artists and performers, implementing the "Code of Conduct for Artists" to promote ethical standards, build a positive image, and enhance artists' responsibility to their audience. A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports stated that, in addition to the "white list" and "black list" criteria, the department is also developing a "green list" with the goal of encouraging artists and celebrities to participate in community activities and promote a positive image for the city.

Ultimately, these "white lists," "black lists," or "green lists" are not meant to strip artists of their glory. What the public expects is not a flawless, perfect role model, but rather prudence in pursuing fame, respect for the law, and a commitment to upholding the values that society places its faith in them. Because while the spotlight may create a star, it is character that determines how long an artist will remain in the public's heart.
