For a safe summer

In Hoa Vang commune, an area with many rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes, teaching swimming and preventing drowning among children is a regular summer task for the education sector and the local political system.

At the end of May 2026, the Youth Union and Children's Council of Hoa Vang commune, in coordination with Lam Quang Thu Primary School, will launch a safe swimming and drowning prevention class for 200 children in the area in 2026.

Swimming lessons are held at the swimming pool of Lam Quang Thu Primary School, open from Monday to Saturday every week, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM in the morning and from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the afternoon. Each session has 2 instructors, divided into 3 lessons, with 10 students participating in each lesson.

Le Cong Thang (4th grade, class 4/3, Lam Quang Thu Primary School) shared: “During the swimming lesson, the teachers taught me a lot of useful knowledge and skills such as: basic swimming techniques, techniques for floating in the water if you accidentally fall in, how to rescue someone who is drowning, and first aid for drowning victims. My friends and I are very excited about this free swimming class.”

According to representatives from Lam Quang Thu Primary School, the class, with its motto "Safe Learning - Skill Development - Drowning Prevention," creates a beneficial and healthy summer environment for children. In addition, students are educated and encouraged to comply with safety regulations when playing in deep water areas, and to avoid playing in the water unsupervised.

According to Mr. Dinh Ngoc Hieu, Secretary of the Hoa Vang Commune Youth Union, all primary and secondary schools in the commune have organized safe swimming and drowning prevention classes for children during the summer. In addition to coordinating free swimming lessons, the Hoa Vang Commune Youth Union and Children's Council have mobilized social resources to donate 50 life jackets to students at Lam Quang Thu Primary School whose homes are located in areas frequently flooded during the rainy season.

More skills - more opportunities

As part of the 2026 "Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign," the Youth Union and Children's Council of Da Nang City, in coordination with the Da Nang Children's Palace, organized numerous activities to support, care for, and provide comprehensive education for young people and children during the summer. A highlight was the free swimming lessons and free water safety training program for children in the city.

Swimming lessons will take place at the Da Nang Children's Palace swimming pool and the Da Nang Youth Union swimming pool, starting from the end of May 2026 and lasting until the end of August 2026. In parallel with organizing free swimming lessons, the City Youth Union also directs all levels of the Youth Union throughout the city to coordinate with localities and schools to organize swimming lessons and training on drowning prevention for children during the summer. The City Youth Union aims to organize 350 free swimming lessons for children during the "Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign" in 2026, in order to effectively protect and care for children.

Besides the risk of drowning, children also face many other dangers such as fires, falls, and traffic accidents. To help children prevent injuries, equipping them with essential life skills will give them a better chance of avoiding unfortunate incidents.

In primary and secondary schools throughout the city, as part of their annual extracurricular programs, schools are integrating activities to raise awareness and equip students with essential life skills, especially as they approach the summer break. This is also one of the important initiatives implemented by the Department of Education and Training during the Month of Action for Children and to strengthen coordination in managing and educating children and students to ensure their safety during the 2026 summer break.

Representatives from An Khe Primary School (An Khe Ward) stated that before the summer break, the school implemented a series of activities to raise awareness and train all students in drowning prevention skills. In addition, students practiced some basic skills such as: handling situations when encountering a victim, calling for help, using rescue equipment safely, and how to protect themselves when participating in water activities.

With a proactive approach to prevention, the school aims to ensure that 100% of its staff, teachers, and students are equipped with knowledge about drowning prevention during the 2026-2030 period; and strives to have over 90% of students practice safe self-rescue and rescue assistance skills.

Sharing the common goal of equipping students with life skills, Truong Hoanh Primary School (Dai Loc commune) recently collaborated with the Fire and Rescue Team of Area 7 to disseminate knowledge and skills in fire prevention, firefighting, and rescue to all staff, teachers, and students of the school.

Based on the knowledge and guidance from the fire and rescue police force, students are equipped with additional skills in handling fires and explosions; safe escape skills; and practice using portable fire extinguishers and some initial firefighting equipment. This helps them raise awareness and acquire essential life skills to respond to unexpected situations in life.
