For weddings in the West, wedding gates are always invested in because they represent the face of the bride and groom. Many young people do not hesitate to spend money to have magnificent wedding gates. However, for the Youth Union members in communes and hamlets, the wedding day must be economical, so everything needs to be more minimalistic, so that after the wedding, they will have some capital to do business. Understanding this mindset, along with the desire to join hands to make the big day of the members happier and more bustling, the Traditional Wedding Gate Making Club in Khanh Hai and Khanh Binh Communes has taken practical action. That is to give the Youth Union members majestic and unique traditional coconut leaf wedding gates.
Accordingly, whenever a Youth Union member prepares for a wedding, the Commune Union and the Club will proactively offer to make a coconut leaf wedding gate and decorate the bride and groom's family. Just coconut leaves, banana trees... and some simple accessories such as leaves, fruit clusters of the tree are enough to create a beautiful wedding gate. The closeness to nature of the coconut leaf wedding gate and the unique, meticulous shaping have made a strong impression on the guests attending.

Ms. Nguyen Hong Niem, Secretary of Khanh Hai Commune Youth Union, shared: “The traditional coconut leaf wedding gate club of the Vietnam Youth Union of Khanh Hai commune made coconut leaf wedding gates as wedding gifts for 3 members of the club. Normally, the cost to rent a wedding gate is from 2 million VND or more. To save money and also to contribute to the happy day of the Youth Union members, we made this small gift ourselves. 2 days before the wedding, the members of the club gathered to survey and find materials for the wedding gate. The uncles and aunts around loved each other so they donated leaves, trees... everyone was enthusiastic and happy. A coconut leaf wedding gate created by the meticulousness and dedication of the members created a highlight for the wedding space on the big day of the bride and groom. We were able to give 3 wedding gates to the Youth Union members, creating excitement and strengthening solidarity among the members.”
The preparation for the wedding gate took about 3 days, with stages such as finding materials, making the frame and completing the process. In addition to natural materials from bamboo and coconut leaves, to make the gate more modern, the groom prepared 100 roses made from silk, leaves and artificial hydrangeas (to be reused after the wedding day, saving the cost of buying real flowers) to create a highlight for the gate to be more beautiful on the wedding day. The "Newlywed" sign was also made by the brothers and sisters in the club themselves and added LED lights available in the club to add sparkle to the gate.
The wedding gate and wedding space were supported by Khanh Binh Commune Union.
Mr. Nguyen Tuong Duy, Secretary of Khanh Binh Commune Youth Union, shared: “The club has made 7 wedding gates for the Youth Union members. Every time someone announces their wedding, everyone chattered and asked for a wedding gate for them, because the time spent working together in the Youth Union has created a connection of love and affection for each other. While making the wedding gate, the bustling laughter created a joyful atmosphere filled with positive energy. The bride and groom's families were also excited to have a unique wedding gate that is full of the tradition of our ancestors in the past, which is hard to find nowadays.”
The donation of coconut leaf wedding gates is maintained by Khanh Hai and Khanh Binh Commune Unions. A team of about 10 people will come to the house and do all the steps without the support of the bride and groom's family. All expenses incurred are also shared by the Commune Union and the Club.
A beautiful coconut leaf wedding gate was given to the Youth Union by Khanh Hai Commune on the big day.
Pham Hoang Huy, a member currently active in the Trum Thuat Hamlet Youth Union, Khanh Hai Commune, could not hide his joy and happiness when receiving the wedding gate from his friends and brothers: “The unforgettable memory is probably everything that happened during those days. What moved me the most was the last day of completing the gate. That day I had to go to the bride's family to attend the ceremony, so I could not complete the wedding gate with my brothers and sisters. I left in the morning, and when I returned that night, the gate was completed, very beautiful. The gate was made very meticulously and thoughtfully, especially the "Newlywed" sign. That is the affection that my brothers and sisters in the Club have for me. The wedding gate received many compliments from the guests who attended the wedding day, and people passing by also gave the Club many compliments.”
Each wedding gate given away is a beautiful memory for the Youth Union members during their time working for the local Union and Association. Many young people also take photos and promote these beautiful wedding gates on social networks to create more surprises for the bride and groom.
For young people, making a coconut leaf wedding gate only takes a day or two of hard work, but preserving the beauty of a traditional wedding and helping your fellow Youth Union members is something to cherish.
