According to the Spanish CCOO union, this is a consequence of Meta's abrupt cancellation of its partnership with Telus International, a Canadian technology company operating in Barcelona under the trade name Barcelona Digital Services.
Telus has been a partner with Meta since 2018 in the field of moderation and handling harmful content on social media. In total, 2,059 employees will be affected by this decision, primarily those directly involved in reviewing, evaluating, and removing content that violates community standards.
Telus did not disclose a specific number of job losses, but stated that it would provide maximum support to affected employees, including opportunities for reassignment to other positions.
CCOO, along with another Spanish union, UGT, has also signed a preliminary agreement guaranteeing the "highest possible legal compensation" for workers, and stated that the layoff process will be implemented between May and September.
Last April, Meta announced a change in its moderation policy, ceasing proactive review of violating content such as hate speech, and only intervening when users report it. Notably, the company announced it would remove independent fact-checking organizations in the US – which CEO Mark Zuckerberg accused of being “too politically biased” and “destroying trust rather than building it.”
Meta insists that ending its contract with Telus does not mean the company will reduce its ability to moderate content posted on its online platforms.
