This morning, April 2, the exhibition “Listening to the story of fabric” was held at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum. The exhibition introduces 75 fabric cutting paintings - the result of 45 years of hard work, traveling through many regions of the S-shaped land of artist Tran Thanh Thuc.
The exhibition opens up a unique art space where fabric is not only a material but also a medium to tell profound stories about culture, history and people.
Fabric is not only a material for creating art, but also a means to express love for life. From small pieces of fabric, through the meticulous hands of artist Tran Thanh Thuc, they have become colorful and vivid paintings, taking viewers on an emotional journey of the past days.
These are images of childhood with flower trellises in the countryside, of the ferry trip to school between two sirens, the emotions after each trip after seeing the beautiful scenery of the homeland or the works recording the painful history of Hanoi during the war until the images of Hanoi today. Through that, artist Thanh Thuc wants to bring to viewers the simple beauty of the homeland, at the same time conveying the message of resilience, vitality and hope for the future.
Sharing with reporters of VietnamPlus Electronic Newspaper, artist Tran Thanh Thuc said that fabric cutting paintings do not have any sketches, each work originates from spontaneous inspiration. The most important thing is to find the right fabric material, there must be a combination of colors and images to create a complete work.
“The biggest challenge in fabric cutting is light. Unlike painting, recreating light in fabric cutting requires subtlety and skill in using many layers of fabric to create depth, light and soul of the scene. This requires me to collect many types of thin, light and suitable fabrics, expressing the feelings I want to convey,” said artist Thanh Thuc.
In particular, within the framework of the exhibition, artist Tran Thanh Thuc introduces for the first time the fabric collection that she has collected and pursued throughout her career. The exhibition runs until April 8.
