Returning to Vung Vieng: A fishing village in the Heritage Bay

Báo Tài nguyên Môi trườngBáo Tài nguyên Môi trường06/01/2025

Rated by international press as one of the 16 most beautiful fishing villages in the world , domestic experts consider it one of the most beautiful spots in Ha Long Bay due to its scenery and geological and geomorphological features.

I don't remember how many times I've visited Vung Vieng fishing village, but each visit brings a different feeling. I remember in 2008, I accompanied a delegation from Quang Ninh province to Vung Vieng fishing village to encourage, educate, and guide the people on sorting, collecting, and processing plastic waste on-site in the bay... The people were very supportive, and they implemented the plan in a very systematic and scientific way. With its towering limestone mountains dividing the area into clear blue pools and bays, and the well-preserved floating houses and community centers of the fishermen, Vung Vieng fishing village possesses a unique, poetic, and distinctive beauty.

This floating village is home to many households who both engage in fishing and aquaculture and organize tours for domestic and international visitors. As one of the four fishing villages located within the Hạ Long Bay World Heritage Site, Vung Vieng attracts fewer tourists compared to Ba Hang, Cua Van, and Cap La, resulting in a more spacious and peaceful atmosphere.

Despite the hardships of life, the floating houses of the fishermen in Vung Vieng fishing village are relatively spacious and clean. In recent years, thanks to the attention from Quang Ninh province and increased tourist awareness, the lives of the people have improved significantly. They have more money, can afford to send their children to school on the mainland, and buy necessary household items. Vung Vieng has also built its own community center where people gather, which also serves as a place to buy handicrafts and a rest stop for tourists.

In particular, the locals are very hospitable and highly responsible in protecting the environment. They often proactively remind tourists to dispose of their trash in designated collection points and sorting bins, and then bring it ashore for proper disposal.

For a more ideal experience exploring Vung Vieng fishing village, visitors can book a Halong Bay cruise tour, then paddle a bamboo boat or kayak to Vung Vieng fishing village. After passing through the cave, you'll see the simple and rustic image of Vung Vieng fishing village. Each floating raft nestled against the mountain looks like rough pearls waiting to be polished.

The further into the village one goes, the more the "fairyland" unfolds before their eyes; no one knows how they might find themselves drifting amidst the mountains, sea, and blue sky.
