The referee who officiated the second leg of the semi-final between PSG and Arsenal was banned for match-fixing. |
At the Parc des Princes, PSG were awarded a controversial penalty. In the 69th minute, with Arsenal needing a goal to get back into the game, referee Felix Zwayer was asked by the VAR team to review the situation.
Slow-motion replays showed Achraf Hakimi's kick hit Myles Lewis-Skelly's arm, despite referee Zwayer initially allowing play to continue. After reviewing the incident on the monitor, Zwayer decided to award a penalty.
The decision was widely criticised online, with some calling it “the worst decision ever” or even “absurd”. Zwayer is one of UEFA’s top referees, but was previously banned for his involvement in a match-fixing scandal.
In 2005, as a young referee, Zwayer was involved in a match-fixing scandal after accepting £250 from his colleague Robert Hoyzer. Although not the central figure in the scandal, Zwayer was banned for six months, while Hoyzer received a sentence of more than two years in prison and a lifetime ban.
After the ban, Zwayer returned and developed his career. In 2009, he was allowed to officiate Bundesliga matches and gradually asserted his position in Europe, especially the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands. The fact that UEFA continues to trust Zwayer with important responsibilities in big matches shows that his reputation has been restored.
Back to the penalty situation, Vitinha stood up to take it. However, his shot could not have been worse. After a time-consuming run-up, Vitinha took a shot towards the right corner of the goal. Goalkeeper David Raya easily saved the shot.
However, PSG doubled their lead just minutes later when Hakimi scored from outside the box, beating Raya. Arsenal reduced the score to 1-2 thanks to Saka in the 76th minute, but it was only a consolation goal.
Arsenal lost 1-3 on aggregate, while PSG advanced to the final to face Inter Milan in Munich.
