According to the standards of higher education establishments of the Ministry of Education and Training, from 2030, the average land area per full-time learner must not be less than 25m², the floor area for construction serving training per the number of full-time learners. not less than 2,8m². However, currently, many schools only have a very low average land area per student.
Land: 0,92m²/university student
Those universities Youth Online Statistics show that most currently have very low land area/students. Many schools are only 1/20th of the 2030 standard. Not only private schools but also many large universities, members of national universities, regional universities, and national key universities all have areas Land/students are very modest.
This area includes dormitories, rental facilities, affiliated facilities, and school facilities but hardly serves training.
Notable among these are a series of long-standing universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. During the recent training conference on implementing higher education institution standards, when the Ministry of Education and Training invited representatives of Hanoi University of Science and Technology to present a presentation on comparing the ministry's standards, the hall was filled with voices. whispered: "Follow in the footsteps of giants".
However, even the school considered a "giant" in the higher education system still does not meet the standards for land area. The average land area/student of Hanoi Polytechnic University/student is currently only 7,4m² (announced 2022-2023).
“There are only 6 years left to apply this standard. Schools must fight for the Government and localities to allocate land for higher education, invest in graduating schools, and creating classes. This is a special public service that requires investment. America and Europe don't talk about it, the field is vast. Schools in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines are also very large.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology currently has an area of 26 hectares in the center of Hanoi. Land in the center of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is calculated with a coefficient of 2,5, so the average land area of the school is about 14,6m²/student. Compared to the standard, it is still very low. The school must expand the campus, at least about 20 hectares more to meet the standards" - Mr. Vu Van Yem, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, assessed.
Statistics show that there are currently many schools whose land area per student is only about 1/20 of the standard. The school with the lowest land area/student currently in our statistics is the Banking Academy training facility in Son Tay town with only 0,925m²/student.
Construction floor area exceeds standards
While the school's land fund is still limited, the schools' construction for training has improved significantly when compared to standards. In the criterion of construction floor area, most schools currently meet the standard, above the standard.
However, because the standard is only 2,8m², it is not surprising that many schools pass. The strange thing is that some schools do not meet this standard. Notably, all three schools that we statistically have below-standard floor area are all public schools.
“The requirement of only 2,8m² that many schools ask for, I find strange. In foreign countries, people laugh at it. At Hanoi Polytechnic, the construction floor area reaches 7,1m²/student, far exceeding the standard but I think it is still too cramped. Experiential space for students and working space for lecturers is too cramped. Yet the 2,8m² that many schools are asking for is still acceptable" - Mr. Vu Van Yem opined.
