From now until the end of the year, Ho Chi Minh City will have 4 multi-story parking lots.

Prefabricated multi-story parking garages are considered to occupy less space and have lower costs compared to underground parking; they are easy to install and construct quickly; and they can be dismantled and relocated when needed.

Accordingly, the Public Transport Management Center (Department of Construction) has surveyed and proposed a plan to invest in the construction of multi-story parking lots at bus stations under its management.

Currently, the Department of Construction has reviewed and proposed supplementing the maintenance budget for the infrastructure system serving public passenger transport in 2026 to implement the installation of 4 above-ground parking lots using the transportation budget.

After securing funding, the Public Transport Management Center will carry out the necessary procedures, submit the economic and technical feasibility report for approval, and commence construction, striving to complete the projects in 2026.

According to the plan, parking lots will be built at the Cho Lon bus station (areas A and B); the 23/9 Park bus station and the Tan Phu bus station. Each lot will have a capacity to serve approximately 50 cars and 120 motorbikes.

The Department of Construction recognizes that the development of multi-story parking lots aligns with the city's transportation sector's direction regarding the construction of parking facilities in the city center and areas lacking parking spaces. These prefabricated multi-story parking lots are considered to occupy less space, have lower costs compared to underground parking, are easy to install and construct quickly, and can be dismantled and relocated when needed.

Regarding the shortage of parking spaces in the central area, the Department of Construction stated that it will continue to research and advise competent authorities on the issuance of appropriate mechanisms and policies to invest in additional underground and above-ground parking lots in the area.

Prior to 2006, Ho Chi Minh City had planned to build more than 10 public parking lots. After 15 years, the number of planned locations has dwindled to only 4 underground parking lots, but none of these projects have been implemented. The severe shortage of parking spaces for motorbikes and cars not only causes difficulties and frustration for residents but also leads to many negative consequences for traffic safety and urban aesthetics, as numerous streets are occupied and used as makeshift parking lots.
