During a cleanup campaign along the roads in Binh Son commune, we met Mr. Tran Thanh Day, a militia member and youth union member of the commune. Armed with garbage collection tools, Mr. Day nimbly worked alongside others clearing bushes, cleaning up roadside garbage collection points, and reminding residents to maintain environmental hygiene. After these community activities, he returned to his daily work as a barber. “When the local community organizes activities, I arrange my work schedule to participate. Sometimes I join others in cleaning the roads and clearing bushes; other times I assist residents with online public services, encourage voluntary blood donation, or participate in maintaining security and order in the locality. These are small things, but with many people working together, our homeland will develop even more,” Mr. Day shared.

According to Mr. Day, participating in activities at the local level has given him many valuable experiences. From joining youth union members to encourage people to maintain environmental hygiene to assisting residents with online procedures or patrolling at night with soldiers, Mr. Day has had the opportunity to interact and work with people. “Each activity has given me more experience, confidence, and a feeling of being more useful. Thanks to participating in many activities, I have become more mature and understand the people better,” Mr. Day said.
As a teacher and the Youth Union Secretary of Binh Son Kindergarten, in addition to her work caring for children, Ms. Dang Thuy Quyen arranges her time to participate in local activities. “Although my work at school is quite busy, whenever the Youth Union or the local community needs support, I always participate. Many tasks would be very stressful and time-consuming if only the dedicated staff were to handle them. When Youth Union members and young people work together, the workload is shared, and people receive more timely support,” Ms. Quyen said.
Through each program, Ms. Quyen had the opportunity to meet and work with many youth union members, young people, and local officials, thereby expanding her network and learning many good practices and skills in her work. Ms. Quyen said: “Previously, I was hesitant to participate in large group activities, but the more I participated in local movements, the more open and confident I became. Each activity not only helped me make more friends and colleagues who shared the same spirit of dedication but also created a bond between people. The experiences from these activities helped me better understand the thoughts and aspirations of parents and the people,” Ms. Quyen shared.
According to Mr. Diep Trung Hoang Anh Kiet, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Youth Union in Binh Son commune, the most valuable quality of the youth union members is their spirit of volunteerism and commitment to the local community. Many, despite their busy schedules, still make time to participate in activities. Some activities take place on weekends, evenings, or during peak work periods, but when the locality needs support, the youth union members enthusiastically participate, contributing to the faster and more effective implementation of many grassroots activities and spreading the spirit of solidarity within the community.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh, Deputy Director of the Public Administrative Service Center of Binh Son Commune, the youth union members play a connecting role between the locality and the people. “Young people are often approachable and dynamic, making it easy to reach out to, disseminate information to, and support the people, especially in new areas such as digital transformation or online public services. They are a crucial force in bringing local activities and policies closer to the people,” Mr. Thanh said.
