Taremi wants FIFA to quickly provide support to the Iranian national team. |
Following their 2-2 draw against New Zealand in the opening match of Group G at the 2026 World Cup, the Iranian national team faced difficulties off the field. Captain Mehdi Taremi appealed to FIFA for intervention after the entire team was forced to leave Los Angeles overnight (local time) instead of staying to prepare for the next match.
In the match held in Los Angeles, Iran fell behind twice but fought back to equalize and earn a valuable point. However, the joy after the match was quickly overshadowed by the demanding travel schedule that the West Asian team had to undertake.
According to Taremi, Iran planned to stay in Los Angeles for another day to recover before returning to their base in Tijuana, Mexico. However, the plan unexpectedly changed when the entire team was ordered to leave the city immediately after the match.
"It was a really difficult situation for us. The whole team was supposed to do recovery training the next morning before traveling. Instead, we had to leave Los Angeles immediately. This wasn't good for the team's preparation and it wasn't good for the quality of the World Cup," Taremi shared.
The 34-year-old striker said the players and coaching staff are under immense pressure due to the constant changes throughout the tournament. He called on FIFA to provide more practical support for the Iranian national team in the future.

Iran will face many difficulties in their participation in the 2026 World Cup. |
After the match, FIFA President Gianni Infantino also went into the dressing room to meet with the Iranian players. According to Taremi, the head of FIFA pledged to listen to and support the team in resolving any difficulties that arose.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei also expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision to change the schedule. The coach said the coaching staff did not receive a clear explanation for having to leave Los Angeles overnight, even though the original plan was completely different.
Despite facing numerous non-professional obstacles, Iran still has a chance to advance in the 2026 World Cup. After drawing with New Zealand, the Asian representative will face Belgium (June 22) before concluding the group stage with a match against Egypt (June 27).
