TASS reported yesterday (December 15), citing informed sources, that approximately 700 Ukrainian soldiers are trapped in the town of Hannivka, about 13 km south of the strategic city of Kurakhove (Donetsk province, eastern Ukraine).
The soldiers reportedly requested to withdraw several times but were denied. Additionally, a Russian military official stated that at least 200 Ukrainian soldiers in Kurakhove were surrounded and forced to take shelter in a thermal power plant. Kyiv has not commented on this information.
Points of conflict: A new type of air combat in Ukraine; Syria angered by Israeli actions.
The fighting, now in its third winter since the outbreak of hostilities, is proving unfavorable for Ukraine. Not only are Ukrainian forces at a disadvantage in Kurakhove, but they are also straining their defenses in Pokrovsk, a crucial logistical hub for Kyiv's army in the east. The Ukrainian Khortytsiya military command reported on December 14th that Russian forces had pushed Ukrainian troops out of several positions around Pokrovsk, Reuters reported.

Military observers predict Ukraine is very close to losing Kurakhove, Pokrovsk, and other strongholds in the east. TSN news site reported on December 14th that Ukrainian Army Commander Mykhailo Drapatyi said that the leadership and soldiers are doing everything to stop the enemy, emphasizing that the top priority at this time is to focus all efforts on defending key areas where settlements are at risk. "This requires us to reallocate resources. At the same time, we need to think not only for tomorrow, but for the next month or six months to restructure," Drapatyi said.
