Russia-Ukraine conflict today, October 28, 2024: Ukraine makes a "hot offer" for peace negotiations with Russia, ready to accept territory as defined in 2022.
Ukrainian President's Chief of Staff Andriy Ermak has just announced that Ukraine will be ready to return to the actual border starting in early 2022. This is what Kyiv has put forward as a prelude to negotiations with Russia.
However, Andriy Ermak emphasized that Kyiv is not ready to cede territory.

Ukraine backs down.
Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky's Chief of Staff, Andriy Ermak, confirmed in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that President Zelensky never spoke about a territorial compromise, but noted the need to accept Ukraine's internationally recognized borders. At the same time, he acknowledged his willingness to negotiate based on the actual territorial situation before Russia began its Special Military Operation.
“ To begin negotiations, we need to go back to the situation before Russia opened fire at 4 a.m. two years ago. Then we will talk about how to restore sovereignty to the 1991 border ,” Andriy Ermak stated.
Ermak added that Crimea and Donbass remain part of Ukraine for Kyiv and that this issue is "not a topic for discussion." The Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian President added that he does not want to freeze the military conflict but wants to end it.
The Russian State Duma called Ukraine's conditions unacceptable.
According to Yuri Shvytkin, Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Russian State Duma, the option of starting negotiations with Ukraine to return to the border in 2022 is not suitable for Russia. He stated that the prospect of starting peace talks under such conditions is inappropriate.
“ The conditions put forward by the Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine are clearly unacceptable to us. Currently, we have achieved major victories, control many settlements, and are continuing to advance actively on all fronts. In my opinion, this statement is an attempt to withdraw the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) from the besieged positions. This is something we should not allow under any circumstances ,” Yuri Shvytkin stated.
The Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma's Defense Committee emphasized: “We have repeatedly stressed that peace negotiations only take place on our conditions, based on the current realities. You just have to adhere to these principles. Many different proposals of this kind could lead to a ceasefire. This would result in the opposing side reorganizing and regrouping its forces. This cannot be allowed under any circumstances.”
Former British Prime Minister calls on Ukraine to accept the 2022 border.
Earlier, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined his personal views on how the conflict in Ukraine might end if Republican candidate Donald Trump becomes the new US President.
Specifically, it was Trump who could end the conflict on conditions favorable to Kyiv and the West. One of the negotiating conditions was that Ukraine maintain its border status by February 23, 2022. This essentially means that Kyiv cannot return to the 1991 border.
Boris Johnson stated: “ To avoid future conflicts and instability, the rest of Ukraine will need to be recognized as a free state, capable of choosing its own destiny within the EU and NATO .”
To achieve this, Johnson suggested that allied nations should increase military support for Ukraine and lift restrictions on deep strikes into Russian territory to force Moscow to withdraw. After this scenario materialized, the former British Prime Minister proposed signing an agreement with Russia: providing special protections for Russian-speaking people in Ukraine, as well as restoring global relations between Washington and Moscow. This is something only Trump, as President of the United States, could accomplish.
Selidovo changes ownership.
According to Military Summary, the latest battlefield images from Kursk show that Russian troops have completely taken control of the area surrounding the village of Novy Put.
The Russian side is continuing to intensify its offensives south of Donetsk. Russian units are rapidly advancing from Ugledar, breaking through the AFU defenses and taking control of additional positions at Shakhtarske, Novoukrainka and much of Bohoiavlenka.
In the direction of Kurakhovo, the Russian army also succeeded in controlling the first positions in the city center.
Notably, numerous sources on the front lines have confirmed the fall of the town of Selidovo. The AFU is believed to have abandoned most of its positions within the settlement and begun to retreat from the area. Ukrainian defenses appear to have collapsed under Russian pressure. The dire logistical situation will also have contributed to this.
At the same time, Russian ground offensives are also underway on the northern flank in the direction of Pokrovsk.
The Readovka channel confirmed that the Russian victory flag is flying in the cities of Selidove and Gornyak in the Donetsk region.
Despite the fact that both previously fortified areas of the AFU were deliberately prepared for sustained defense, the simultaneous fall of two cities in one day is a clear indication of the declining morale and fighting strength of Ukrainian soldiers.
In the direction of Pokrovsk, the Russian side advanced in a way that gave the enemy no time to retreat to "more advantageous positions". Because Russian units quickly approached Vishnevoye, the AFU lost control of all logistical routes to Selidovo.
Russian soldiers of the 110th Motorized Infantry Brigade surprised the enemy by crossing the Volchya River and launching an attack, driving AFU troops out of the village of Zoryanoye. This was the key moment that led to the fall of the important town of Gornyak a few days later.
