On September 7th, Hanoi Police FC announced that Vu Van Thanh had undergone successful ankle surgery in Ho Chi Minh City. He is expected to be out of action for 6-7 months, meaning he will definitely miss the Vietnamese national team's third round of Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers scheduled for October, November, and March 2026.
Van Thanh suffered ligament and meniscus injuries during the 2024-2025 V-League season. His most recent match for Hanoi Police FC was against Ha Tinh in Round 22, on May 9th. In that game, Thanh played for 29 minutes before having to leave the field due to the pain.
In previous matches, Van Thanh also did not play the full 90 minutes. After about 3 months of unsuccessful rehabilitation training, he was sent by Hanoi Police Club for surgery to definitively treat the injury.
"The absence of Van Thanh is a major difficulty for Hanoi Police FC," head coach Alexandre Polking shared at the beginning of the 2025-2026 V-League season.
Injuries caused Van Thanh to miss the Vietnamese national team's training camps in June and September. He was still called up for the March camp, but was a substitute in the match against Laos.
Van Thanh is the sixth Vietnamese national team player to be sidelined by injury in 2025. Before Thanh, Nguyen Van Toan, Bui Vi Hao, Ho Tan Tai, Nguyen Xuan Son, and Doan Ngoc Tan all underwent surgery.
