On September 7, the Hanoi Police Club announced that Vu Van Thanh had successfully undergone ankle surgery in Ho Chi Minh City. He is expected to be out of action for 6-7 months, and will definitely miss the Vietnam team's third qualifying round matches for the 2027 Asian Cup in October, November and March 2026.
Van Thanh suffered ligament and meniscus injuries while playing in the V-League 2024 - 2025. The last match he played for the Hanoi Police Club was against Ha Tinh in round 22, which took place on May 9. In this match, Thanh played for 29 minutes and had to leave due to too much pain.
In previous matches, Van Thanh also did not play the full 90 minutes. After about 3 months of unsuccessful rehabilitation, he was sent to Hanoi Police Club for surgery to completely treat the injury.
"The absence of Van Thanh is a big difficulty for Hanoi Police Club," head coach Alexandre Polking shared at the beginning of the 2025-2026 V-League season.
The injury caused Van Thanh to miss the Vietnam national team's training sessions in June and September. In the March training session, Thanh was still called up, but sat on the bench for the match against Laos.
Van Thanh is the 6th player of the Vietnamese team to be injured and have to rest in 2025. Before Thanh, the Vietnamese team had Nguyen Van Toan, Bui Vi Hao, Ho Tan Tai, Nguyen Xuan Son and Doan Ngoc Tan go under the knife one after another.
