What is 18K gold?

VTC NewsVTC News12/11/2023

What is 18K gold?

According to international regulations, pure gold, also known as 24K gold, contains up to 99.99% gold, with the remainder being negligible alloy content. The letter "K" stands for Karat, which is an indicator of gold purity.

18K gold (also known as 750 gold) is a type of gold that contains 75% gold and the remaining 25% is other alloys.

24K gold is very soft and unsuitable for crafting delicate jewelry. Therefore, 18K gold is considered the optimal solution to overcome the softness of pure gold.

Classification of 18K gold

On the market, 18K gold is divided into three types:

- 18k 75% gold: a type of gold containing 75% pure gold.

- 18k 70% Gold: contains 70% pure gold.

- 18k Gold 68%: contains 68% pure gold.

How to distinguish 18K gold from other types of gold.

Each type of gold has a different value, so customers need to know how to distinguish between them to ensure they get the best deal when choosing a product.

Through color

18K, 14K, 10K, and 24K gold have completely different colors, depending on the quality and concentration of the gold. The higher the gold content, the darker and brighter the color.

10K and 14K gold contain a mixture of various metals, with different ratios depending on the type, resulting in a relatively bright color that fades easily over time. Meanwhile, 18K gold has a silvery-white coating, so its color isn't too pale but isn't as deep as 24K gold.

Through its exquisite craftsmanship

The craftsmanship of different types of gold also varies. Both 18K and 14K gold have a certain hardness, allowing them to be crafted into exquisite jewelry with a smooth surface. 18K and 14K gold are often set with gemstones to enhance the beauty of the jewelry.

Meanwhile, 24K gold, due to its characteristic softness, is rarely made into jewelry. Because of the difficulty in preserving the intricate details of the craftsmanship, 24K gold is only used to make gold bars and ingots for safekeeping.
