My neighborhood has over twenty households of people from Quang Tri and Quang Nam provinces who settled here in the 1980s. Every year, the older residents make trips back to visit their relatives in their old hometown. They say that even though they are successful and could "rest in peace" in Binh Thuan because they consider it their second home, they still cherish the memories of their old hometown, so they feel compelled to return occasionally. Most of the younger generation, born between 1980 and 2000, have moved to Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces to study, work, and start families, so their children are "genuine" city dwellers with little knowledge of the countryside. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang and her husband, Mr. Hoang Dat, from Tan Uyen City, Binh Duong, recently brought their two children back to Ham Thuan Bac to visit their maternal family. Their children had just started their summer vacation, so the family arranged for them to visit their maternal grandparents' home to relax and experience rural life. She recounted: "Life in the city is so hectic, so there's not much time to travel, especially when I go back to my hometown for something, I'm often too busy to bring my children along because they're too busy with school, so they're completely clueless about the countryside. The other day, after taking them to Phan Thiet beach and eating fresh seafood, the two kids insisted on going to Da Mi to see durian, mangosteen, and macadamia trees, because they'd eaten fruit all the time but never seen a tree. We booked a two-day camping tour in a macadamia orchard, and the kids spent the whole day searching the hillside, bringing back all sorts of fruits they collected, like macadamia, durian, avocado, mangosteen... showing off their collection to their city friends online with delight..."
Returning home, the first feeling is being surrounded by the love of family. It's a feeling whose sacred value is only understood by those who work far from home or live elsewhere. Returning home brings a sense of peace to everyone. Time seems to stand still when visiting old friends. Besides inquiring about each other's health, people reminisce about beautiful memories of a time spent in their birthplace. Some, who were once poor, have returned after working far away and achieving success. Back home, eating simple, traditional dishes cooked by family members years ago suddenly tastes incredibly delicious. There's free-range chicken salad, chicken porridge, sour fish soup with snakehead fish, crispy fried tilapia, braised catfish with ginger leaves… In the bustling city, you sometimes don't have time to enjoy these dishes. But back home, with the atmosphere of family reunion, the leisurely time to chat and enjoy a hot meal, all the worries of daily life suddenly disappear.
Booking.com (an online travel platform) recently released survey data from June 1st to July 31st, showing the preferred choices for summer 2025: beach trips, nature exploration, and trips to major cities. 59% of respondents chose nature exploration, second only to beach trips at 61%. This demonstrates the growing appeal of tours exploring lakes, waterfalls, and rural areas, especially among young people, for their summer vacations. Binh Thuan's tourism sector is experiencing a boom thanks to the favorable conditions created by the new Phan Thiet – Dau Giay and Vinh Hao – Phan Thiet expressways. Furthermore, the Department of Tourism and tourism businesses have collaborated to organize numerous cultural, sports , culinary, and other events, making the area attractive to tourists. Besides its strong beach tourism, Binh Thuan has elevated the development of community tourism, rural tourism, and lake, waterfall, and forest tourism to meet the growing demand for nature exploration experiences.
During the summer break, taking your children back to the countryside to visit relatives and enjoy a family vacation sounds simple but has a strange appeal. Back home, you get to eat your favorite foods, strengthen the bond between your children and their grandparents, and allow them to explore and learn life skills. The peaceful countryside, with its fish ponds, colorful orchards, and ripe red or golden fruits hanging from the branches, is captivating to everyone. Have you taken your children back to the countryside this summer? Give it a try!
