Physical fitness issues continue to plague Mason Mount. |
On the evening of February 1st, Manchester United secured their third consecutive Premier League victory. Despite conceding a late equalizer to Fulham, Benjamin Sesko's injury-time goal secured all three points for the Old Trafford side, allowing them to reclaim fourth place in the league table.
However, Mount's absence came as a surprise to many, especially since the English midfielder had been training normally this week. Alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu, Mount is the most notable name on the injury list.
Speaking after the match, coach Michael Carrick quickly reassured fans. "Mason had a minor collision in training. Nothing serious, but it's a shame he couldn't participate today. Mount will be back soon," Carrick said.
Having joined MU for £55 million, Mount has yet to find consistency. Frequent injuries and increasing competition in midfield have meant he is no longer a preferred choice in the starting lineup, and has even been benched in many recent matches.
Dorgu's injury opened up a starting opportunity for Matheus Cunha on the left flank, while Mount was expected to come on from the bench. However, fitness issues meant he missed out.
According to manager Carrick, Mount's return for the match against Tottenham this weekend remains uncertain. Manchester United desperately need three points to maintain their top-four position, but they haven't beaten Spurs in their last eight encounters across all competitions.
