The price was hammered by Christie's during the 20/21 Century Art - Evening Sale on April 9. Lucio Fontana created the work in 1968, using water-based paint on canvas. While the paint was still wet, he used a knife to make a straight cut, using black gauze to cover the empty space on the back of the cut, showing depth. Lucio Fontana chose a white background because it is the purest, least complex color, creating the impression of ''endless space''.

Also at the Christie's event, the artist's work of the same name was priced at 693,000 euros (20 billion VND). The location and length of the cuts in the two paintings are similar, only the paint color is different. He once said: "My cuts are the mystery of the unknown in art." The auction house said the two works represent Lucio Fontana's pioneering spatial philosophy.

Lucio Fontana was born in 1899 in Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentina. In 1905, he moved with his family to Italy. From 1916 to 1918, he served in the Italian army during World War I. In 1921, Fontana returned to Argentina and began making busts in his father's workshop. From 1925, he was critically acclaimed for his abstract sculptures using unusual materials. The artist held his first exhibition at the Galleria del Milione, Milan in 1931.

According to Sotheby's, Lucio Fontana created a series of works with incisions starting in 1949. He titled them Concetto Spaziale , which he used for most of his later paintings. He said: ''I don't want to paint a picture, I want to open up a new dimension.'' Fotana wanted to be a painter like his grandfather, but the artist realized that specific artistic terms were not for him. He died in 1968 in Comabbio, Italy.
