A bottle of water placed in a hotel room might seem like it's just for quenching thirst, but for many solo travelers , it's also a safety check.
The method is very simple. After entering the room, guests can gently roll or toss a water bottle under the bed. If the bottle rolls through and appears on the other side of the bed, it indicates that the space under the bed is clear and there are no large obstructions. Conversely, if the bottle stops midway or gets stuck, guests should check more carefully to ensure there are no unusual objects underneath.
According to The Independent , this tip was shared by flight attendant Esther Sturrus, who works for KLM, the Royal Dutch Airlines, in a video about hotel safety tips. Instead of bending down to look directly under the bed, using a water bottle allows passengers to quickly check the area out of sight.
The item used doesn't necessarily have to be a water bottle; guests can use a soda can or a small object that can roll under the bed.
In reality, the chances of a stranger hiding under the bed are very rare. However, this tip is still popular because it taps into the cautious mindset of travelers, especially when checking into a room alone, at night, or in an unfamiliar place.
However, rolling the water bottle should only be considered an additional check, not a guarantee of absolute safety. When checking into a hotel, guests should still observe basic elements such as door locks, safety latches, windows, balconies, wardrobes, and emergency exits. If any unusual signs are detected, the safest course of action is to leave the room and contact the reception desk.
