According to a recent report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, by the end of September this year, Vietnam's durian production had reached 984,800 tons, a sharp increase of 16.6% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, October is the harvest season for this "king of fruits" in high-yielding growing regions like Gia Lai and Lam Dong. Off-season durian in the Mekong Delta provinces will also be harvested in the latter months of this year.

It is estimated that Vietnam's durian production could reach over 1.2 million tons this year.

Accordingly, in addition to serving the needs of the domestic market, a very large quantity of durian is also exported to China, Thailand, and other markets.

According to preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the past nine months, Vietnam's durian export turnover is estimated at 2.5 billion USD – a historical record. Of this, exports to the Chinese market alone are estimated at approximately 2.3 billion USD.

Conversely, Vietnam also spent nearly $9 million importing durian in the first eight months of 2024. Compared to the same period last year, the import value of this item increased dramatically by 1,057%, or approximately 11.6 times.

In fact, Vietnamese durian is widely available in the domestic market. Besides that, many stores also sell imported durian from Thailand and Malaysia at very high prices.

For example, Fumoni durian costs 200,000-340,000 VND/kg, Kanyao durian ranges from 430,000-700,000 VND/kg, Black Thorn durian costs 900,000 to 1 million VND/kg; Musang King costs 650,000-900,000 VND/kg. Some other imported durian varieties are commonly priced in the range of 400,000-500,000 VND/kg.

According to importers of durian, the price of each type of durian depends on whether it is grade 1 or grade 2. Additionally, durian transported by air is more expensive than that transported by road or sea. This is because the shorter the transport time, the fresher and tastier the durian.

Breaking last year's record, the 'king of fruits' cruises to the top of history . Hundreds of millions of Chinese people are crazy about durian, spending billions of dollars each year buying and eating it. Meanwhile, Vietnam is reaping huge profits from exports, with revenue from selling this "king of fruits" in the first nine months estimated at $2.5 billion – an unprecedented record in history.
