Living up to those expectations, Sam Nang consistently achieved the title of excellent student for many years. Currently, Sam Nang is entering the final stage of her last year of high school, aiming for high scores in the high school graduation exam to have the opportunity to enter university.
Mr. Dao Danh Do, Sam Nang's father, emotionally shared: "Although our family is still facing many difficulties, the money provided by the Border Guard has always been used for its intended purpose, covering our son's educational expenses. Sam Nang's aspiration is to enroll in the Border Guard Academy so he can follow in the footsteps of the officers in doing meaningful work. I hope this activity by the Border Guard will continue so that those in difficult circumstances can pursue their dreams of going to school, just like my son."
Not only in Sam Nang, but after nearly 10 years of implementation, the program has helped 36 students continue their education.
Support and companionship
According to Colonel Ha Huy Truong, Deputy Political Commissar of the Can Tho City Border Guard Command, the "Helping Children Go to School" program provides 500,000 VND per month per child. Annual assessments show that 15 children achieved excellent academic results, 21 achieved good results, including 4 who are currently in 12th grade, preparing to enter a crucial stage of their lives. These figures not only reflect the effectiveness of material support but also demonstrate the positive transformation in the children's willpower and determination to succeed. This support is derived from monthly salaries and allowances, voluntarily contributed by officers and soldiers, reflecting the responsibility and affection of the green-uniformed soldiers for the future generation.
Lai Hoa Secondary and High School is located in a coastal commune where over 70% of the population are Khmer ethnic minorities. Nearly 9.7% of the total student population comes from poor, near-poor, or disadvantaged households. Maintaining student enrollment and ensuring adequate learning conditions for students remains a significant challenge for the school. Many students have to help their families after school; some have even considered dropping out due to financial constraints. Understanding this difficulty, the Can Tho City Border Guard Command has supported three students at the school through the "Helping Children Go to School" program, providing them with 500,000 VND per month.
Mr. Huynh Buu Tuan, Principal of Lai Hoa Secondary and High School, shared: "What the school staff cherishes most is the comprehensive care from the border guard force. Not only do they provide tuition fees for the students, but the officers and soldiers also regularly coordinate with the school to monitor the learning and training process of each student. Sometimes they come directly to the school to talk with the homeroom teachers; other times they visit students' homes to inquire about their well-being, encourage them, and understand their family circumstances. This close bond creates a warm and friendly relationship between the soldiers and the school in this border region."
Furthermore, over the past 10 years, the Can Tho City Border Guard Command has also awarded more than 250 scholarships, bicycles, notebooks, and school supplies, totaling over 300 million VND. These gifts, though simple, always arrive at the right time and to the right recipients, providing further motivation for the children to continue their education.
The "Helping Children Go to School" program has become a strong source of moral support, inspiring the desire for learning and contribution among students in coastal areas. At the same time, it has contributed to strengthening the people's trust in the Party, the State, and the Army, enhancing the solidarity between the military and the people, and building a solid "people's support" base in the coastal border regions.
