Spain: The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has overturned Vinicius Junior's red card amid protests against racism directed at the Real Madrid striker.

"The RFEF's tournament executive committee believes the referee made this decision without considering the entire course of the match, which influenced the situation," the RFEF announced. "The truth is that the referee was not provided with crucial information, leading him to make an arbitrary judgment. Making an accurate decision in this situation was almost impossible."

Vinicius received a red card in injury time during Real Madrid's 0-1 defeat to Valencia in La Liga on May 21st. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea penalized him for a foul on Hugo Duro. The Brazilian striker appeared to grab his opponent's neck during the altercation at the end of the match.

However, this action may have stemmed from the frustration Vinicius felt due to racist abuse from Valencia fans. At one point, the match was temporarily halted for 10 minutes as the 22-year-old striker pointed at those who had insulted him in the stands. At Vinicius's request, referee Bengoetxea asked the home team's coach, Ruben Baraja, to use the loudspeaker system to call for an end to the situation, but to no avail.

The actions targeting Vinicius ignited outrage in Brazil. The country's foreign and justice ministries pressured Spain to take decisive action. Real Madrid filed a complaint with the state attorney general's office. Many influential figures in football also spoke out in support of the Brazilian striker.

On May 22nd, the RFEF suspended six officials involved in officiating the Valencia-Real Madrid match, including VAR referee Iglesias Villanueva. They claimed that he did not provide sufficient information to referee Bengoetxea, leading to Vinicius's red card.

On May 23, Spanish police arrested seven people suspected of racist remarks directed at Vinicius. The RFEF also announced a $49,536 fine for Valencia and ordered the club to close part of its south stand for the next five matches.
