Is Vision Pro getting a new version soon?

Apple is about to launch an upgraded Vision Pro with the M4 chip and new straps to increase its competitiveness amidst the continued rise of many industry rivals in gaining market share.

Since its launch, Vision Pro glasses have played a crucial role in Apple's wearable device development strategy. The upcoming upgrade will not only improve on technical weaknesses but also help Apple maintain its market presence while awaiting the next generation to be perfected.

In the long term, the company makes no secret of its ambition to dominate the smart glasses segment, especially AR glasses, as they allow data and images to be overlaid onto the real world without the need for a see-through camera. However, this is a huge technical challenge, requiring extended development time and resources.

While competitors are constantly accelerating, Apple chooses to go slow and steady, following its own path. This aligns with the company's product philosophy: not launching products before the technology is truly ready and the user experience is guaranteed.

Performance upgrade

Apple is preparing to release its first upgrade for the Vision Pro. According to Bloomberg , the new version will focus on improving processing performance and user comfort, given that the Vision Pro hasn't yet gained strong consumer appeal.

Specifically, the next-generation Vision Pro will be equipped with the M4 chip, the same processor found in the latest iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and iMac models. This is a significant improvement over the current M2 chip, which was released in 2022. In addition, Apple is also experimenting with expanding the number of Neural Engine cores, a crucial component in AI tasks.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the Vision Pro is that it can be uncomfortable to wear for extended periods. The device weighs around 600g, making it prone to neck strain and headaches.

To address this issue, Apple is developing new straps designed to better distribute weight, reducing pressure on the back of the neck and the top of the head. The company is also researching optional strap designs, aiming for greater flexibility in wearing depending on the time and situation of use.

According to tech experts, this upgrade is a "refresh," meaning it retains the overall design but improves performance and comfort to keep Vision Pro competitive for the next few years. This could be a crucial step in helping the device establish a clearer foothold in the enterprise segment, where factors such as AI processing and stability are paramount.

Adjust strategy

Alongside the Vision Pro upgrade, Apple is outlining a long-term plan for wearable devices. According to Bloomberg , the company aims to launch a completely new second-generation version in 2027. This model is said to have a more compact design, using new materials to reduce weight while maintaining performance and image quality.

Additionally, Apple is also researching a simpler smart glasses model that doesn't integrate virtual reality or augmented reality. This product is expected to launch as early as 2026.

This device will focus on basic functions such as voice assistant, video recording, or making calls, similar to the Ray-Ban glasses developed by Meta. This is seen as a "popular" approach to wearable devices, preparing for the emergence of true AR glasses by the end of this decade.

This move comes as Apple faces increasing competitive pressure from rivals such as Meta and Samsung. In particular, Facebook's parent company is developing a high-end AR headset codenamed Orion, expected to launch in 2027. Meanwhile, Samsung is likely to unveil its Moohan mixed reality headset later this year, at a more competitive price than the Vision Pro.

In terms of software, Apple will also release visionOS 26 in the second half of this year, including features such as eye control, virtual widgets, and expanded support for third-party apps. This is expected to boost the ecosystem for Vision Pro, which is currently struggling due to a lack of compelling and exclusive applications.
