The play "The Flag Embroidered with Six Golden Characters " is a theatrical production by Sen Viet, presented at the 2024 Children's and Youth Thematic Theatre Festival in Hai Phong from May 13th to 20th.
Besides Vu Luan, the play also features artists Le Trinh, Hoang Tung, Le Trung Thao, Vo Ngoc Quyen, Huynh Thanh Khang, Du Bao, and others…
Vu Luan plays the role of Tran Quoc Toan's martial arts teacher.
The play "The Flag Embroidered with Six Golden Characters " extols the bravery, courage, and unwavering desire of the young Trần Quốc Toản to contribute to the defense of his homeland.
This is considered a familiar play, staged in many genres such as cải lương, tuong, chèo…
This time, the play was newly written by author Nguyen Phuong and directed by Le Nguyen Dat with a rather innovative approach, so that after participating in the festival, the play will continue to have more performances for the audience.
The upcoming performances will be at the Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Theatre on May 11th and 12th, and June 1st and 2nd.
Young artist Le Trinh plays the role of Tran Quoc Toan. Meanwhile, artist Vu Luan plays the character of Uncle Phuong, Tran Quoc Toan's martial arts teacher.
In the old days, when he was at the Bach Long Children's Troupe, Vu Luan, along with his friends like Tu Suong, Trinh Trinh, Que Tran, Linh Ty, Binh Tinh… participated in plays, including children's plays directed by teacher Bach Long.
However, he later became better known for his leading roles, singing duets with artists such as Ngoc Huyen, Tu Suong, and Trinh Trinh…
It's safe to say this is a rare occasion for him to return to a children's play. In the role of the martial arts instructor, the director probably wanted to showcase Vu Luan's singing, acting, and dancing abilities, as traditional Vietnamese opera is his forte.
We want our children to love history and traditional art.
Director Le Nguyen Dat shared that with the play "The Flag Embroidered with Six Golden Characters ," he not only wanted young audiences to understand and love Vietnamese history even more.
In addition, he tries to help young children develop a greater love for traditional art.

Because of that desire, he focused on the music for the play. He included dozens of folk songs and cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) pieces, and had musician Thanh Liêm arrange new ones for use in the play to "attract" children.
"I was afraid that if I did it purely as cải lương (traditional Vietnamese opera), the children and their parents might be hesitant, so I decided to 'entice' them gradually. For example, I would sing vọng cổ (a type of Vietnamese folk song), but not the whole verse; instead, I would immediately jump into a lý (a type of Vietnamese folk song) piece."
"It will be more engaging and also a way for the children to gradually get acquainted with cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera)," Nguyên Đạt said.
Because it's a play for children, Nguyen Dat staged it in only about 90 minutes. The plot is concise and the pace is fast.
After four performances, Sen Viet plans to collaborate on bringing the play to schools and touring in the provinces. Dam Sen Cultural Park is also discussing plans to introduce the play to audiences visiting the park.
