Suarez will miss the 2026 World Cup.

The information revealed by journalist Rodrigo Vazquez came as a huge surprise to South American football fans. Despite turning 39, Suarez still affirms his desire to continue contributing to his national team. The veteran striker emphasized that he would never refuse a call-up if the team needed him, especially at the World Cup.

However, the relationship between Suarez and Bielsa is believed to have soured after the 2024 Copa America. At that time, the former Barcelona striker publicly criticized the Argentinian strategist for his management of the team as well as the performance of the Uruguayan national team.

Later, although Suarez admitted his remarks were ill-timed and apologized to coach Bielsa, the tensions between the two seem to have had a significant impact.

Suarez himself has admitted that he proactively withdrew from the national team over the past two years to give younger players a chance to develop. However, his absence from the preliminary World Cup squad is still regrettable for many, as this could be the legendary striker's last appearance for the national team.

At the 2026 World Cup, Uruguay is in Group H alongside Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde. The South American team is placing its hopes on stars like Federico Valverde, Ronald Araujo, and Darwin Nunez in their quest to conquer the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
