On September 26th, the "24h News" program of Vietnam Television broadcast a report titled "A meal of white rice with ginger at the Mang Mu school in Yen Bai ."

Specifically, the report described a student's meal at the Mang Mu school (Mo De commune, Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province) as a small amount of white rice with fresh ginger dipped in salt.

The Màng Mủ school branch has 138 students, making it the largest of the six preschool branches in Mồ Dề commune. The school's kitchen was temporarily built more than a year ago and only has one wood-burning stove, so preparing a full meal for the children every day seems impossible.

In the news report, the teacher stated that the school cooks rice twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, students eat packed lunches. During one meal, the teacher noted that four cabbages were used to cook rice for 138 students, and the light soup was said to help the children enjoy their meal more.

After airing, the report received mixed reactions. Public opinion suggested that the images and content in the report did not accurately reflect reality. Specifically, some mountainous districts of Yen Bai province, such as Mu Cang Chai, receive significant attention and support from the Party, the State, and the province regarding student meals, and are not as impoverished as the report portrays.

Regarding the students eating ginger with salt, many believe that for some Hmong people in Mu Cang Chai, hot ginger is a favorite daily food.

A representative from the Yen Bai Provincial Department of Education and Training stated that the province is currently conducting an investigation.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Deputy Head of the Education and Training Department of Mu Cang Chai district, also said that the District People's Committee has directed an investigation and will provide specific information after a conclusion is reached.

Mr. Tuan also affirmed that Mu Cang Chai district has fully implemented and ensured the support policies and regulations of the Party and State for students from ethnic minority and mountainous areas.
