Greening the Ia Nan border militia outpost.

(GLO) - In addition to guarding and protecting the border, officers and soldiers of the Ia Nan Commune Military Command are gradually "greening" the permanent militia outpost by planting 2,000 coffee trees to replace the less productive cashew growing area.

This model helps increase production while simultaneously improving the landscape, enhancing the living standards of militia forces, and strengthening public support in border areas.

On the morning of May 19th, at the permanent militia outpost of Ia Nan commune, a large number of officers and soldiers from the commune's Military Command, along with officials, members of youth unions and associations from various departments and organizations, and residents of Nu village, simultaneously launched a coffee planting campaign. The heavy rain the night before ensured sufficient soil moisture, creating favorable conditions for planting. The planting holes had been prepared in advance, so the work proceeded quickly and smoothly, from transporting seedlings and planting to filling the soil and watering.

The vibrant working atmosphere demonstrated the close bond between the militia and the local people. Notably, 15 officials and residents from Nu village – a sister unit of the commune's Military Command – directly participated in assisting with tree planting.

Ms. Siu H'Phích, Party Secretary and Head of Nu village, said: “We will work alongside the unit in planting and caring for the planted coffee area. Through this, the villagers will also raise their awareness of complying with regulations on protecting territorial sovereignty , linking economic development with maintaining border security.”

The model received a positive response from the permanent militia forces on duty at the checkpoint. Permanent militia platoon leader Nguyen Van Vi shared: “My family also grows coffee, so when the unit implemented the model, I proactively participated from stringing ropes and measuring holes to caring for the trees. I also guided my comrades in the unit to ensure they followed the correct techniques, helping the trees grow well.”

According to Lieutenant Colonel Rơ Ô Việt, Commander of the Ia Nan Commune Military Command: Following the directives of the Commune Party Committee and People's Committee, the unit was assigned to plant 2,000 coffee trees in the area of the permanent militia outpost. This is a practical task, contributing to both economic development and environmental beautification for the unit.

"Coffee plants are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions and yield high economic returns, so when the initiative was announced, the officers and soldiers in the unit were very enthusiastic about implementing it," said Lieutenant Colonel Rơ Ô Việt.

To prepare for the project, starting in February 2026, the unit began clearing vegetation, leveling the ground, driving stakes, dividing the land into plots, and digging holes for planting trees. However, the implementation process encountered numerous difficulties due to the hard soil, making manual hole digging time-consuming and labor-intensive.

To ensure progress, the unit mobilized militia forces to raise funds and hired excavators to assist in digging holes. Another major difficulty was the prolonged hot weather, which affected planting and caring for the trees. The unit invested in an irrigation system with two wells drilled to a depth of over 80 meters and dug a water reservoir nearly 100 square meters in size to ensure a reliable water supply during the dry season.

According to the Commander of the Commune's Military Command, the care of the coffee plantation is carried out flexibly, in accordance with training and combat readiness duties. Many comrades in the unit have experience in planting and caring for coffee, pepper, and rubber trees, so they are assigned to be the core group, guiding other comrades in the care process.

Besides coffee cultivation, the Ia Nan Commune Military Command also maintains vegetable gardens and livestock farming (pigs, cows, chickens, ducks) to boost production, improve living standards, and enhance the quality of life for the forces serving on the border.

According to Ngo Huu Phuoc, Secretary of the Party Committee of Ia Nan commune, the land around the militia outpost was previously mainly used for growing cashew trees, but the economic efficiency was not high. After assessing the soil and climate conditions as suitable for coffee cultivation, the Party Committee and People's Committee of the commune directed the Commune Military Command to develop a plan to convert to a model of planting 2,000 dwarf green coffee trees; it is expected to yield a harvest by 2028.

This model not only helps to effectively utilize the land around militia outposts but also generates additional funding for the unit's regular operations, gradually improving the living standards of militia officers and soldiers on the front lines of the border.
