When we arrived in Thanh Binh hamlet, the newly built Hoi Dong Canal bridge stood out prominently in the countryside. People were bustling across the bridge, and vehicles carrying rice and agricultural supplies were moving smoothly along the way. The joy was evident in the eyes and smiles of the locals when they mentioned the recently completed project.

Standing in front of his house at the foot of the bridge, Mr. Le Van Dot (59 years old) looked towards the new bridge, recalling previous community meetings where residents petitioned the local authorities to invest in building the bridge to make travel more convenient. Mr. Dot said: “This road is the main route for people in the hamlet. Farmers, small traders, and students going to school all use this road. Since its completion, the bridge connecting Giong Rieng and Thanh Hung communes has made travel much shorter and more convenient.”
Not far away, Mr. Vo Van Cho (76 years old), a resident of the same hamlet, slowly recounted: “Previously, to get to the other side, we had to go around more than 5km, which was time-consuming. For the elderly, especially during the rainy season when the roads are slippery, travel becomes even more difficult. Now that there is a new, spacious bridge, everyone is delighted.” During the bridge construction, the people in the hamlet contributed their labor, cleared the ground, and helped transport materials.
The Hoi Dong Canal Bridge is 35m long, 3.5m wide, and has a load capacity of 2.5 tons. The total construction cost was over 472 million VND, of which 422 million VND was raised by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Giong Rieng commune through its Community Charity Fund, and the remaining 50 million VND was contributed by local philanthropists. Mr. Pham Khuong Duy, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Giong Rieng commune, stated that the commune builds public works projects based on the actual needs of the people. When people need bridges or roads, the commune conducts surveys, develops specific plans, and publicly discloses the funding sources to ensure consensus.
The commune has a large geographical area with many canals and waterways, so the need for rural transportation bridges is great, while local resources are limited. Thanks to a transparent and focused approach, many philanthropists continue to trust and support the locality in building bridges and roads, and caring for social welfare. According to Mr. Vo Van Banh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Giong Rieng commune, the commune assigns specific officials and civil servants to be in charge of each field and area; they regularly check progress and promptly resolve difficulties during implementation. Urgent projects are prioritized for review and planning to mobilize resources for early implementation.
From 2025 to the present, Giồng Riềng commune has effectively implemented the principle of "the State and the people working together," constructing 13 rural traffic bridges with a total cost of nearly 4 billion VND. Of this, the State contributed over 300 million VND, with the remainder supported by philanthropists; the people contributed thousands of man-days of labor, donated land, and cleared the ground.
Mr. Vo Van Banh stated: “Mobilizing resources for infrastructure investment, especially rural transportation, is one of the key tasks of the commune in this term, contributing to improving people's lives and perfecting the rural landscape. With the new bridges, many fields are now closer to the main roads, agricultural products are transported more conveniently, students can go to school safely, and people's lives are gradually changing.”
The increasingly improved rural transportation infrastructure helps expand trade connections, creating further impetus for local socio -economic development. More importantly, each bridge built contributes to fostering the people's trust in the Party committee and government, creating momentum for Giồng Riềng commune to continue building an increasingly prosperous and beautiful homeland.
