Located along National Highway 70, a vital transportation artery connecting Lao Cai with the Northwest provinces and the lowlands, Xuan Quang commune has an advantage in the consumption of agricultural products. However, it was only when peach trees took root that this land truly found its right direction.
From a seasonal crop, the peach tree has gradually become a staple crop, opening up new avenues for economic development, contributing to poverty reduction, and increasing people's income.
At this time of year, the Xuân Quang area seems to be adorned with a new, vibrant coat of colors, the brilliant red of peach blossoms interspersed with the fresh green of budding grafts. All these elements blend together to create a lively natural landscape, imbued with the spirit of spring.
The garden of Mr. Tran Dinh Than's family (Thai Vo village) is located on a hillside and spans over 1,000 peach trees. Mr. Than said: "Previously, I worked various jobs to make a living with unstable income, and life was always difficult. Later, when I realized the potential of peach trees associated with the Tet market, my family decided to change direction and commit to peach tree cultivation for the long term. This year, my family expects to bring about 500 trees to the market, with prices ranging from a few hundred thousand to about 10 million VND per tree."
According to Mr. Than, peach trees are easy to care for, resistant to pests and diseases, suitable for many types of soil, and have high economic efficiency, especially during Tet (Lunar New Year). Previously, in Thai Vo village, people mainly grew traditional crops like corn and rice, but now everyone has switched to growing peach trees. Peach trees have truly become a means of poverty alleviation, bringing a better life to many people.
Recounting his journey of "making the land bloom," Mr. Tran Dinh Cong from the same village shared: "In the early days of getting involved in peach tree cultivation, I, like many other households, faced numerous difficulties. Unpredictable weather, especially prolonged periods of frost, slowed down the trees' growth, caused buds to fall off, and some seasons resulted in complete crop failure. However, after learning and researching techniques, along with years of accumulated experience, I am now confident in caring for the peach trees so that they bloom beautifully in time for Tet (Lunar New Year)."
According to gardeners, this year's favorable weather has resulted in more abundant, vibrant, and uniform peach blossoms. Although 2025 has a leap month, causing the peach trees to bud and bloom earlier, the flowers bloom in stages, allowing the trees to maintain their shape, durability, and overall beauty. Furthermore, the market for peach blossoms has been quite stable in recent years. Besides selling directly to customers for Tet (Lunar New Year), many peach growers also offer tree care and rental services, thus improving their income.
As a long-time peach blossom enthusiast, Mr. Le Quyet Tien from Bao Thang commune said that for many families, displaying peach blossoms has become a tradition every Tet holiday. For many years, his family has been sending their peach blossom trees to the gardens of experienced households. Sending the trees helps maintain their desired shape and form. Trees that are no longer beautiful after a few years are replaced with new saplings, ensuring a beautiful tree for Tet while saving money.
Xuan Quang commune currently has over 65 hectares of peach orchards, mainly concentrated in villages along National Highway 70, gradually forming a concentrated peach growing area, bringing sustainable economic benefits. Building on the effectiveness of key crops, including peaches, the commune strives to achieve an average per capita income of approximately 60 million VND/person/year by 2026, further improving the material and spiritual lives of its people. Along with this, the poverty rate in the entire commune is expected to decrease significantly...
Comrade Dang Van Quang, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Xuan Quang commune, said: “Peach trees are one of the important economic development directions of the locality. In recent years, people have not only expanded the area but also focused on improving quality and establishing the Xuan Quang peach brand in the Tet market. The commune government accompanies the people in the production process; at the same time, it strengthens the promotion and sales activities, contributing to expanding the market and helping peach growers feel secure in investing and staying committed to the profession.”
With its potential and advantages, Xuan Quang today is associated with the name "land of spring flowers." Peach blossoms not only bring the Tet atmosphere to each family but also become a sustainable livelihood, helping people develop their economy. When trucks carrying peach blossoms leave Xuan Quang, following spring to all corners of the country, it is also the time when the people here celebrate Tet in abundance.
