According to 9to5Google , online video sharing giant YouTube is testing a new tactic to circumvent ad blockers, whereby the platform will insert ads directly into videos from the server side.

According to the developers of SponsorBlock, an ad-blocking extension, YouTube is currently testing this method. If successful, ads will become an integral part of videos, rendering traditional ad blockers ineffective.

This is seen as the latest move in YouTube's efforts to prevent users from using methods to avoid ads. Previously, the platform had targeted browser extensions and third-party apps with similar functionality.

However, the new method also creates some difficulties for users as the video's timestamp is affected by inserted advertisements.

Currently, server-side ad placement is still in the testing phase and has not been widely rolled out. YouTube has also not issued an official comment on this matter.

Nevertheless, this move shows YouTube is becoming increasingly aggressive in protecting its advertising revenue, while also raising questions about user experience and the balance between advertising and content on the platform.
