10 drinks that help relieve headaches

VnExpressVnExpress04/11/2023

Drinking grape juice, orange juice, ginger tea, or basil tea, which are rich in vitamins C and B and magnesium, can help reduce inflammation and soothe headaches.

Headaches are very common and can be caused by many factors such as stress, unhealthy lifestyle habits, insufficient rest, or other medical conditions.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Duc, Head of the Neurology Department at the Center for Neuroscience, Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that headache treatment should be based on the underlying cause. Doctors can prescribe medications and develop appropriate treatment plans. Patients should get adequate rest and combine this with the use of certain foods and drinks to help improve symptoms.

Lemon and orange juice can relieve headaches, especially when stressed. The vitamin C in lemons and oranges can promote water balance in the body, boost the immune system, and reduce inflammation.

Coffee contains caffeine, which enhances alertness and quickly relieves headaches. However, excessive coffee consumption can cause side effects such as increased heart rate and anxiety. It's best to consume coffee in moderation and avoid drinking it in the late afternoon or evening.

Ginger tea has anti-inflammatory properties, which can be helpful for headaches related to inflammation.

Chamomile tea helps to relax the mind and support the improvement of this condition. In addition to drinking the tea, patients can place warm compresses containing chamomile tea on the forehead, neck, shoulders, etc., to alleviate pain.

Green tea also contains caffeine, but at a lower concentration than coffee, which helps relieve headaches and has fewer side effects.

Peppermint tea soothes and reduces stress. A hot cup of peppermint tea can relax muscles and alleviate pain caused by stress.

Basil water is used for nausea, loss of appetite, bloating, constipation, etc. This drink can be consumed 2-3 times a week to improve headaches.

Vegetable smoothies provide many nutrients, especially vitamin B9 (folate), which is good for patients. You can combine many types of vegetables such as celery, kale, spinach, etc. Limit the amount of sugar and added sweeteners to achieve the best pain relief effect.

Grape juice is rich in magnesium. When the body is deficient in magnesium, blood vessels in the brain quickly dilate or constrict, causing headaches.

Drinking water prevents dehydration and maintains fluid balance in the body. This can sometimes occur due to dehydration, so drink 1.8-2.2 liters of water per day depending on your weight.

Dr. Minh Duc stated that the effectiveness of these drinks can vary depending on the cause and individual constitution; they only help relieve pain, not treat the underlying condition. If headaches are frequent or persistent, patients should not self-treat at home and should ideally consult a doctor for appropriate treatment.
