MR. BOT AND THE BIOLOGICALLY SAFE GROWING GRAPEFRUIT MODEL

Coming to Binh An hamlet, Vinh Huu commune, Go Cong Tay district, asking about the model of growing safe green-skinned grapefruit to adapt to climate change, almost everyone knows Mr. Duong Van Bot (born in 1964, living in Binh An hamlet).

With 7 hectares of garden land, Mr. Bot grows green-skinned grapefruit in a biosafety direction and has achieved encouraging results. Mr. Bot's grapefruit garden is now over 8 years old. Mr. Bot shared that during the growing process, he persistently produced in a biosafety direction such as limiting the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and completely using microbial fertilizers...

In addition, Mr. Bot also uses a large amount of goat manure and chicken manure composted with probiotics for about 6 months to fertilize the trees. On the grapefruit tree trunk, Mr. Bot uses light traps to attract fruit-boring insects, and periodically uses a strong well water spray system to clean the tree roots and trunks to minimize harmful bacteria and stem-boring insects. Therefore, his grapefruit garden produces fruit that meets export standards.

Mr. Bot said that currently, all of the green-skinned grapefruit output from his garden is purchased by a company in Ben Tre province. With the current average price of about 20,000 VND/kg (fruit weighing 900 grams or more), on average, Mr. Bot harvests over 5 tons of grapefruit each year, bringing in hundreds of millions of VND in revenue for his family.

Sharing with us, Mr. Bot said that in addition to this 8-year-old green-skinned grapefruit garden, he also invested in 3 more hectares of land to grow green-skinned grapefruit to prepare to replace aging trees.

This is also a place for the Farmers' Association of districts, communes and towns in Go Cong Tay District to visit and learn from each other's experiences.

Veteran Do Huu Hanh has a good income thanks to growing old bonsai

Veterans Association member Do Huu Hanh (born in 1959, residing in Thanh Lac Dong hamlet, Thanh Nhut commune) is known as an active economic worker, enthusiastically participating in Association activities and new rural construction movements.

Mr. Hanh said that in 1977, he joined the military in the Cambodian battlefield, then worked in the Army in Go Cong Dong district. After retiring, he participated in activities at the Veterans Association of Thanh Lac Dong hamlet, Thanh Nhut commune.

Mr. Hanh said that taking care of bonsai has been his passion since he was young. Realizing the advantage of the locality as the cradle of the ancient mai nu chieu thuy bonsai, he invested in collecting more than 150 mai nu chieu thuy trees everywhere to care for, nurture, shape and style them. From 2010 to now, his family's mai nu garden has grown to about 200 shaped mai nu chieu thuy trees, more than 50 pairs of mai nu chieu thuy have taken on the shape of mother and child, and will be ready for sale in a short time.

"Currently, the average price of a pair of mai nu chieu thuy with an average size is about 10 million VND. Pairs of mai nu chieu thuy bonsai with larger sizes, beautiful roots, and round canopies are more valuable. Normally, I mainly grow the trees until they are fully formed until the price is right, then I sell or exchange them, mainly to recover the capital and have the conditions to continue to maintain my passion for collecting and creating bonsai" - Mr. Hanh shared.

Mr. Hanh shared that his bonsai making skills come partly from his natural talent, and partly from the guidance of friends and bonsai artisans in the Thanh Nhut Commune Bonsai Association.

He said that as long as he is healthy, he will continue to work on his garden and bonsai, both to relax and to earn extra income.

Mr. Hanh's bonsai garden is a regular destination for war veterans' associations in the district to learn from. Mr. Hanh always guides enthusiastically and shares his experience with those who are interested in and love the ancient bonsai profession.

In particular, he also nurseries and propagates many types of plants to give to people in the hamlet, and plants ornamental plants around houses or on the roadside to create a landscape for the area.

Mr. Hanh shared that since the locality built a new rural area, he and the people in the hamlet have actively organized regular garbage collection, cleaning, pruning trees that obscure the view on the roads; and encouraged people to participate in planting trees and flowers to beautify the roads.

Mr. Hanh regularly trims, cleans, and plants flowers to create a green, clean, and beautiful appearance for his rural homeland.
