Manchester United witnessed a remarkable story from their academy when young midfielder Jim Thwaites was unexpectedly called up to the first team just 22 hours after the FA Youth Cup semi-final.
The previous evening, the 18-year-old played the full 120 minutes in the U18 team's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. Immediately after the match ended, Thwaites received notification that he would be included in the squad traveling to Stamford Bridge for the Premier League match against Chelsea on April 19th.
In his first interview with Manchester media, the young talent admitted to being overwhelmed with emotion: "I was so happy. That night I was only thinking about the Youth Cup, and then after the game I was told I was in the first team. It was an amazing feeling."
Thwaites was added to manager Michael Carrick's squad after Leny Yoro suffered a hip problem. Although he didn't play, the young midfielder had a memorable experience on the bench during Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Chelsea.
Internal sources indicate that Thwaites impressed greatly during the first team's recent training camp in Ireland. Carrick also appreciates giving the young player the opportunity to experience a top-level environment and learn how to prepare for big matches.
Thwaites' greatest strengths are his free-kick ability and versatility in midfield. A spectacular free-kick in the U18 derby win against Manchester City in February reminded many of David Beckham.
Regarding this comparison, Thwaites maintained a humble attitude: "That's a huge compliment, but I just want to focus on my own performance."
Amidst Manchester United's ongoing squad rejuvenation, Thwaites' arrival demonstrates that the door to the first team remains wide open for talented players who seize the opportunity.
