4 signs to help detect colorectal cancer up to 2 years early

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world . The study was conducted by experts at the School of Medicine, Washington University (USA), according to The Independent (UK).

Abdominal pain and rectal bleeding may be early warning signs of colorectal cancer.

In the study, the authors analyzed data collected from more than 5,000 patients with early-stage colorectal cancer. They identified four symptoms that could help detect the cancer early: abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and anemia due to iron deficiency.

Patients will start to show symptoms 3 months to 2 years before being officially diagnosed. This means that if the patient recognizes the symptoms early and goes for a check-up, the disease will be detected early and treated more effectively, thereby increasing the survival rate.

The research team also found that if only one of the four symptoms is present, the risk of colorectal cancer will be twice as high as normal. Meanwhile, those who have two symptoms at the same time will have a threefold risk of getting the disease. If there are three to four symptoms, the risk will be 6.5 times. Patients with rectal bleeding and iron deficiency anemia should have a colonoscopy and health monitoring.

"Colorectal cancer does not only affect the elderly. We want young people to be aware and take action when they detect these very obvious signs, especially when people under 50 are considered low risk and are not screened for colorectal cancer during routine health check-ups," said Dr. Yin Cao, one of the study's authors.

He and his colleagues also believe that gastroenterologists and emergency physicians also need to recognize these symptoms to help patients detect colorectal cancer early.

Because currently, many colorectal cancer patients are only detected when the symptoms are severe and cause them to go to the emergency room. By then, the cancer is often in the late stages, according to The Independent.
