Despite being located deep inside Nguyen Van Troi Market (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), for many years, many customers have regularly visited the Hue-style cake shop of the Thuy Linh sisters (59 years old) to enjoy them because… they've become addicted.
She started her business with her stepmother when she was very young.
One afternoon, after a sudden rain shower in Ho Chi Minh City, I visited Nguyen Van Troi Market. The Hue-style cake shop run by the Linh sisters is nestled in a small alley off Le Van Sy Street (District 3).
The shop run by the Linh sisters is attractive with its variety of Hue-style cakes and is located in Nguyen Van Troi market.

Around 3 PM, I met Ms. My Tien (56 years old), Ms. Linh's younger sister, who was busy running the shop and serving customers. She said the shop opens at 1 PM and usually sells out by 5 or 6 PM. She and her sisters take turns selling with a few relatives and children for convenience, and they've been doing this for decades.
Ms. My Tien said that the shop was opened in 1977 by her three sisters and stepmother, also in Nguyen Van Troi market, and has remained unchanged for many years. All of this is simply to make a living, to provide for her family, as she has seven siblings.
“Back then, my sisters and I were very young. Linh was 14, and I was about 11, but we were already helping Mom and the other girls. My family is originally from Hue, so we decided to sell traditional Hue-style cakes,” she confided.
Ms. Tien has been helping her sister sell goods since she was 11 years old.
Each meal costs from 32,000 VND.
After selling alongside their stepmother for over a decade, the three sisters took over the shop. Instead of selling only one type of cake as usual, they decided to offer a wider variety, such as banh beo, banh nam, banh bot loc, banh it ram, etc., to give customers more choices. They have been selling these cakes since they were very young until today, when their hair has turned gray.
What's special about the relationship between the three sisters, Mrs. Tien and her sibling, is their close bond. Not only do they cook and sell Hue-style dishes together every day, but they also live in the same house. All three sisters have their own families and live in a loving extended family. This is what makes them feel incredibly happy.
"I've become addicted to the Hue-style cakes here, so I eat them all the time!"
According to the owner, although they make the cakes using traditional Hue recipes, after many years in business, the sisters have made some changes to suit the tastes of customers in Ho Chi Minh City.
Her secret lies in the freshness and quality of the ingredients. “In the morning, my family makes the sausages to supply wholesale. The homemade sausages, combined with the Hue-style cakes here, are very popular with customers because of their quality. Furthermore, the dipping sauce is the soul of the dish, unlike anywhere else,” the owner confidently stated.
The cakes are attractive and visually appealing.
Regarding the title "Queen of Hue-style cakes" that many customers have given her and her sisters, Ms. Tien laughed and said that it was just a playful, endearing comment from customers. Partly because customers love and appreciate them, and partly because there aren't many stalls or shops selling this dish in Nguyen Van Troi market.
Ms. Ngoc (58 years old), originally from Hue but living in Ho Chi Minh City, said she has been a regular customer here for over 10 years. Her first time eating here was when she accidentally came across the food at Nguyen Van Troi market and tried it.
"After eating here, I became addicted, so I come here to eat whenever I have free time. I like the tapioca dumplings and steamed rice dumplings; these dishes remind me of my hometown. The prices here are also reasonable! Normally, after eating, I buy some to take home for the kids, as they are hesitant to eat outside," she confided.
Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa (25 years old, residing in District 10) also comes here to eat every afternoon with a few friends. He learned about the restaurant through social media, tried it a few times, and became a regular customer.
Many people have been regulars here for years.
The restaurant is located at 209/16 Le Van Sy Street, inside Nguyen Van Troi Market.
The customer said that he usually orders a full plate with four different types of cakes when he comes here. He said he likes each type because they have their own unique flavor. "I've been to Hue and eaten these cakes before. The ones I eat here are quite similar to the Hue dishes I've had, but the taste suits Southerners like me better. I often get together with friends to eat here," Mr. Hoa said with a smile.
