Although laptop battery technology has advanced significantly, its core operating principle remains unchanged. Below are five harmful mistakes you need to eliminate immediately.

There are daily habits that are silently damaging your laptop battery.

1. Leaving the charger plugged in 24/7 even when the battery is already 100% full.
Many people have a habit of keeping their laptops plugged in all the time. However, with lithium-ion batteries (the most common type of battery today), maintaining a 100% charge for too long puts significant stress on the battery cells, accelerating the aging process.
Instead of charging to 100%, try to maintain the battery level around 80% – this is considered the limit to protect component lifespan. Many modern laptops are equipped with features like automatic charging cutoff or 'branch charging' – switching power delivery directly to the hardware instead of through the battery. Take full advantage of these features.
2. Squeeze out every last drop of battery power.
In contrast to the habit of constantly keeping the laptop plugged in, frequently letting it run completely out of power (0% battery) is equally damaging to the battery. Constantly draining the battery will severely reduce the battery's ability to store electricity.
In particular, if you have a spare laptop that you rarely use, don't put it away in a cupboard when the battery is completely drained. Not charging it for months will cause the battery to passively discharge, creating a barrier film on the electrodes. As a result, when you need to use it, the battery may be completely damaged and beyond repair.
3. Regretting spending money on cheap chargers and cables.
Batteries are sensitive energy sources and require a stable current that strictly adheres to safety standards (such as USB-PD). Cheap, generic chargers and cables on the market often ignore these standards to cut costs.
Using chargers from unknown sources that don't guarantee a stable output current is like gambling with your battery's lifespan, and even risks fire or explosion. The advice is to only use the original charger that came with your device, or buy from reputable, certified accessory brands.
4. Bring your laptop to bed and place it on your lap.
Placing the device on soft surfaces such as blankets, mattresses, pillows, or on your lap will inadvertently block the ventilation slots on the underside of the machine.
When airflow is obstructed, internal heat will skyrocket. High temperatures are the number one enemy of batteries. This habit not only causes lag and component wear but also leads to battery swelling and premature degradation. Use your laptop on a flat surface or consider purchasing a cooling pad.
5. Neglecting to update system software.
Do you frequently click the 'Ask me later' button when your computer prompts you for an update? This habit is indirectly draining your computer's battery.
Operating system updates not only bring new interfaces and features, but also contain important bug fixes that optimize the system and how the device consumes power. Furthermore, third-party software is always fine-tuned to run best on the latest platform. Using an outdated operating system will cause the computer to consume more resources to process tasks, leading to excessive strain on the battery.
