5 features that can easily mislead you when buying a new monitor.

Are you about to buy a new computer monitor? Consider those monitor specifications that look good on paper.

The computer monitor market is witnessing a fierce race in technical specifications. However, behind the dazzling 8K resolution or hundreds of Hz refresh rates lie sophisticated financial traps. To avoid becoming a 'victim' of flashy marketing campaigns, users need to be discerning and identify five features that truly offer no practical value.

The flashy features of the screen should be considered before buying.

1. The 8K craze

8K resolution sounds like the pinnacle of display, but in reality, at this point, it's like buying a supercar to drive down a narrow alley. 8K content is currently extremely scarce, from streaming platforms to AAA games. To run smoothly at 8K, you'll need a fortune-priced PC system with top-of-the-line NVIDIA graphics cards.

Instead of spending money on pixels that are difficult for the naked eye to distinguish at normal viewing distances, investing in a high-quality 4K panel with absolute color accuracy would be a wiser choice.

2. Built-in speakers

Despite years of improvements, in-monitor speakers remain largely a temporary fix. Due to the limited physical space of thin screen bezels, these speakers often produce a thin sound, lack bass, and are prone to distortion at high volumes. For anyone with basic entertainment needs like watching movies or playing games, a mid-range separate speaker system or a dedicated headset will provide a far superior audio experience compared to paying extra for a weak integrated sound system.

3. The HDR400 'Trap'

Many users mistakenly believe that any monitor with an HDR label will produce vibrant images. In reality, the HDR400 standard on mainstream monitors is often just a marketing ploy to increase the selling price. With a maximum brightness of only 400 nits and lacking local dimming, HDR images on these monitors often appear washed out or overexposed.

Experts recommend that if you want to truly experience HDR, start with HDR600 or higher – where the actual brightness and contrast are strong enough to make a noticeable difference.

4. Refresh rate above 240 Hz

While the jump from 60 Hz to 144 Hz or 240 Hz provides an incredibly smooth experience, the difference between 240 Hz and 540 Hz is extremely subtle to the average eye. Only top-level professional eSports athletes can perceive that tiny difference. For most users, spending millions of extra dollars on an ultra-high refresh rate not only costs the monitor but also puts strain on the CPU and GPU to maintain the corresponding frame rate.

5. Curved screen in a small size.

Curved screens were created to enhance the viewing experience, but this is only meaningful on ultrawide sizes (34-49 inches). When applied to traditional 24- or 27-inch screens, the curvature not only fails to improve the experience but also distorts straight lines – a disaster for graphic designers or architects. Furthermore, smaller curved screens often take up more desk space and have a narrower viewing angle compared to flat screens of the same size.

Focus your budget on core values such as color coverage (sRGB, DCI-P3), panel type (IPS or OLED), and actual brightness. These are the factors that determine your satisfaction after hours of work or entertainment in front of the screen.
