Who should not eat ginger?

VTC NewsVTC News07/12/2024

According to physician Bui Dac Sang of the Hanoi Traditional Medicine Association, people with a hot constitution, prone to mouth ulcers, constipation, or who sweat excessively or are currently sweating should not eat ginger. Eating too much ginger over a long period of time can cause eye irritation and excessive tearing.

Ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant with a fleshy, branched rhizome that spreads out like a hand, bearing many shoots from which stems reach 80-100 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, 20-30 cm long, and grow upright. The flowers are yellowish-green with purple edges, and the fruit is a berry.

Ginger originates from India and Malaysia and is now found in all tropical countries. In Vietnam, ginger is grown everywhere. Even during the time of the Hung Kings (2879-287 BC), our ancestors used ginger with meat such as birds, fish, and turtles to ward off cold and aid digestion. Since then, people have known to use ginger, onions, garlic, chili peppers, and perilla leaves as daily spices to prevent illness.

Ginger contains 2-3% essential oil, 5% resin, 3.7% fat, starch, and pungent substances (Zingerone, Zingerol, Sogal). Fresh ginger (sinh khương) has a spicy taste, is slightly warm in nature, and has the effect of combating cold, expelling phlegm, preventing vomiting, and aiding digestion. Roasted ginger (thán khương) treats cold stomach pain and diarrhea. Dried ginger (can khương) has the effect of dispelling cold and treating colds and diarrhea. Ginger peel (khương bì) has the effect of reducing edema (diuretic).

In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is an ingredient in many remedies for treating colds, expelling phlegm, relieving coughs, and relieving stomach aches.

Some remedies using ginger

You can use 7 slices of fresh ginger, 7 onions, and a bowl of water to make a decoction. Drink it hot, cover yourself with a blanket to induce sweating, and this will treat heatstroke, colds, wind-related illnesses, or fever.

If you have a cold, try boiling 7 slices of fresh ginger, one teaspoon of Chinese tea, one fresh lemon, one teaspoon of strong liquor, and one teaspoon of honey together to make a decoction to treat colds, coughs, and shortness of breath.

Roasted ginger, peeled, sliced, and chewed, with the juice swallowed, treats malaria and cough with phlegm. Fresh ginger decoction treats stomach pain and bloating.

Fresh ginger, crushed and applied topically, is used to treat injuries and chest pain. Many people have to go to work early in the morning, and sometimes they faint or become exhausted due to exposure to drafts.

To prevent catching a cold, before going outside you should drink a sip of good quality wine (or medicinal wine), or chew and swallow a piece of ginger.

The above information addresses the question "who shouldn't eat ginger." To maximize the benefits of ginger, if you have any health conditions, you should consult a specialist to avoid potential harm.
