Alonso took over Real Madrid last May, replacing Carlo Ancelotti after he left Bayer Leverkusen. Despite being expected to usher in a new era at the Santiago Bernabeu, he couldn't last the entire season.
According to European media, Marseille quickly set their sights on Alonso after parting ways with Roberto De Zerbi. The French club fell into crisis after being eliminated from the Champions League, culminating in a 0-5 defeat against PSG in Ligue 1.
De Zerbi's departure was by mutual agreement, triggering a series of top-level changes, including the resignation of Sporting Director Mehdi Benatia, who later returned to the role for the remainder of the season.
In that context, Alonso was seen as a potential candidate. However, he reportedly "immediately refused" the offer because he did not want to get involved with an unstable team.
Unable to convince the former Real Madrid manager, Marseille appointed Habib Beye on a contract until 2027. Beye had just been sacked by Rennes after a run of four winless matches, but the Marseille board believed that his internal understanding and connection with the team would help him create the necessary boost.
After 22 rounds, Marseille are fourth in Ligue 1, 12 points behind league leaders RC Lens. Meanwhile, Alonso is still resting and there are rumors that he may return to England in the future to replace Arne Slot.
