Alphabet raises $80 billion to develop AI.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, announced on June 1st a plan to raise $80 billion to boost investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, including a $10 billion investment from Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.
According to the announcement, the new funding will be used to expand computing capacity and data centers to support AI products and services amid continued strong demand from businesses and consumers. Alphabet stated that current demand has already exceeded the capacity of its existing infrastructure.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the biggest challenge today is not market demand but computing capacity. According to him, issues related to electricity, land availability, and supply chains are creating an urgent need to scale infrastructure faster to meet the growing demand for AI.
Previously, Alphabet raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $180-190 billion, higher than its previous estimate. Wall Street analysts predict that the four major tech companies—Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon—could spend more than $700 billion on capital investments this year, while total industry-wide AI infrastructure investment could exceed $1 trillion by 2027.
According to the plan, Alphabet will raise $30 billion through underwritten stock offerings, including $15 billion in mandatory convertible preferred stock. The remaining approximately $40 billion will be raised through the sale of Class A and C shares on the market starting in the third quarter of this year.
Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley will be the principal co-managers for this fundraising round.
Berkshire Hathaway began investing in Alphabet in 2025 and is now considered one of the technology giant's major shareholders. This new investment further demonstrates Berkshire's confidence in Alphabet's long-term growth prospects in the AI field.
Over the past year, Alphabet's stock has more than doubled in value thanks to investor expectations for its AI products, particularly Google's Gemini platform.
