Mr. Sau Seu (Meritorious Artist Huu Chau) is always proud of his son Ut Tung (Truong Minh Thao), who graduated as an engineer and has a successful life in Ho Chi Minh City. After fainting and going to the doctor, he found out he had heart failure, so he wanted his son to get married to have peace of mind. When Ut Tung returned to his hometown to pay his respects to his mother, he forced his son to marry Tham (Syni Trang), a girl in the neighborhood who needed money to treat his father's illness. Ut Tung refused because he already had a girlfriend in the city. Mr. Sau Seu opposed Ut Tung marrying Trang (Thuy Diem), a single mother with a complicated past. He forced Ut Tung to choose between love and filial piety, causing the father-son conflict to reach its peak...
“Getting a Wife for Father” tells a simple story, with everyday characters, mixed with a bit of humor. A father in the countryside loves his son but in the wrong way, only used to imposing; a son who is not as perfect as his father expected, struggling to make a living in the city. Along with a series of supporting characters, each with a different situation but easy to remember. Two-thirds of the film takes place in the countryside, so the scenes of houses, rivers, and daily life are all imbued with the character of the West. The neighborly love here is also very lovely. The scenes of neighbors caring for and helping Mr. Sau Seu when he has an accident, when there is a funeral; or when he accidentally says something that makes the whole neighborhood stop playing, then easily forgives him when he apologizes… are all simple.
The conflict between Mr. Sau Seu and his son is evoked, developed and resolved appropriately. Everyone has their reasons, only when they know how to think of the other side can they find a common voice to forgive and love each other more. Through the character of Mr. Sau Seu, the audience sees a generation of parents who love their children but show it in the wrong way and always think that it is good for their children. All mistakes only stop when parents know how to sympathize, understand and respect their children's choices.
The film depicts the fate of female characters who have suffered many disadvantages due to family circumstances and social prejudices, but everyone keeps a bright mind and tries to overcome adversity. Mrs. Hai Hanh (People's Artist Hong Van) loved Mr. Sau Seu since she was a girl, then quietly stayed by his side when he was old to take care of him and worry about everything. The character Lua (Leona Khanh Tien) works hard to take care of her children and old mother. Tham (Syni Trang) is gentle and filial, because she wanted money for her father's medical treatment, she agreed to marry Ut Tung because of the dowry Mr. Sau Seu gave her. Trang (Thuy Diem) was married once, had to overcome violence and social gossip...
The film has a heartwarming ending, opening up a new life not only for Mr. Sau Seu and his son but also for the unfortunate women. Everyone solves their problems and is happy. The story, though gentle, has a heavy message about the value of family love and humanity.
