Mr. Sau Seu (Meritorious Artist Huu Chau) is always proud of his youngest son, Ut Tung (Truong Minh Thao), who graduated as an engineer and has a successful life in Ho Chi Minh City. After a fainting spell, he discovers he has heart failure, so he wants his son to get married to put his mind at ease. When Ut Tung returns home for his mother's memorial service, Mr. Sau Seu pressures him to marry Tham (Syni Trang), a girl from the neighborhood who needs money for her father's medical treatment. Ut Tung refuses because he already has a girlfriend in the city. Mr. Sau Seu opposes Ut Tung marrying Trang (Thuy Diem), a single mother with a complicated past. He forces Ut Tung to choose between love and filial piety, causing the father-son conflict to reach its peak…
"Getting a Wife for Dad" tells a simple story with ordinary characters, infused with a touch of humor. A father in the countryside loves his son but in the wrong way, only knowing how to impose his will; a son who isn't as perfect as his father expects, struggling to make a living in the city. Along with a series of supporting characters, each with their own circumstances, the film is memorable. Two-thirds of the film's setting is in the countryside, so the houses, rivers, and daily life are distinctly Mekong Delta. The neighborly relationships are also endearing. Scenes of neighbors caring for and helping Mr. Six Sếu when he has an accident, when there's a family gathering; or when he accidentally says something that causes the whole neighborhood to stop being friendly, and then easily forgives him after he apologizes… all are simple and genuine.
The conflict and disagreements between Mr. Sau Seu and his son are explored, developed, and resolved appropriately. Everyone has their own reasons; only by considering each other's perspective can they find common ground, forgive, and love each other more. Through the character of Mr. Sau Seu, the audience sees a generation of parents who love their children but express it in the wrong way, always believing it's best for them. All mistakes only cease when parents learn to empathize, understand, and respect their children's choices.
The film portrays the fates of female characters who suffer many disadvantages due to their family circumstances and social prejudices, yet all maintain a pure heart and strive to overcome adversity. Mrs. Hai Hanh (People's Artist Hong Van) loved Mr. Sau Seu since she was a young girl, and then quietly stayed by his side in his old age to care for him and worry about everything. The character Lua (Leona Khanh Tien) diligently cares for her children and elderly mother. Tham (Syni Trang) is gentle and filial; wanting money to treat her father's illness, she agreed to marry Ut Tung because of the dowry offered by Mr. Sau Seu. Trang (Thuy Diem) has been married once before and must overcome domestic violence and social gossip…
The film has a heartwarming ending, opening up new lives not only for Mr. Sau Seu and his son but also for all the unfortunate women. Everyone resolves their problems and finds happiness. Therefore, the story, though gentle, carries a powerful message about the value of family and humanity.
