At the age of 22, after graduating from Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Nguyen Thi Tham decided to return to the hometown of General Vo Nguyen Giap to start her career. For her, the low-lying, rice-growing land with its warm, humane folk songs captivated the heart of this girl from Minh Chau commune, Dien Chau district ( Nghe An province ), keeping her by the green Kien Giang river.

Having been involved with the Red Cross Society of Le Thuy district for 17 years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham has been present at almost all the "hot spots," accompanying those less fortunate and giving them the strength to overcome life's challenges. Ms. Tham said that over the years, the society's humanitarian activities have gained the trust of the community and have increasingly attracted more organizations and individuals to participate, thereby spreading positive values in society.

Through innovative resource mobilization and program organization methods, in 2023, she and her colleagues successfully raised funds to build a community bridge in Cum Coi, Coi Da village (Ngan Thuy commune) worth 250 million VND; built a school canteen at Kim Thuy No. 2 Primary and Secondary School worth 300 million VND; supported the construction of 26 new Red Cross houses worth nearly 1.2 billion VND; sponsored 3 mobile swimming pools for students at Thai Thuy Primary School, Hong Thuy No. 1 Primary School, and Phong Thuy Primary School with a total value of over 550 million VND; and donated 6 aluminum boats to residential areas. They provided 200 million VND in support for purchasing school equipment and carried out other regular humanitarian activities, such as: mobilizing thousands of Tet holiday gift packages, installing free water filters, donating dozens of livestock and poultry farming livelihood models to the Bru-Van Kieu people and fishermen in coastal communes...

On behalf of the benefactors, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham visited and presented gifts to patients at Le Thuy District General Hospital.

On behalf of the benefactors, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham visited and presented gifts to patients at Le Thuy District General Hospital.

In particular, she, along with association officials from the district to the grassroots level, researched and launched many new models, such as: "Safe School" to train primary and secondary school students in emergency response skills; opening a free English reading and exchange room in Xuan Lai village (Xuan Thuy commune), then expanding English classes to Loc Thuy and Ngu Thuy Bac; mobilizing restaurants, Hoang Phuc pagoda, and charitable groups to cook porridge directly at the hospital and distribute it free of charge to patients, 4-6 pots/month. Notably, when floods occurred in the area at the end of October 2024, she connected with restaurants and charitable groups to cook thousands of free meals and porridge to supply patients and their families for a week during the natural disaster.

She also directly manages the Le Thuy Food Bank Community Food Warehouse, receiving food from Food Bank Vietnam and donations from the public to provide food for charitable programs in mountainous communes; proactively implementing early response activities before natural disasters occur in the area. In 2024, the Le Thuy Food Bank Warehouse was honored to receive the FOOD HERO award from Food Bank Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition to participating in disaster prevention and response in her area, in 2023, Ms. Tham and other volunteer groups mobilized support for relief efforts in Ta Ca commune, Ky Son district (Nghe An province). Following that, in 2024, she directly participated in a relief trip to Tuyen Quang province to help people overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath. After these relief activities in various provinces, Ms. Tham decided to establish a rapid response team in the district to participate in disaster prevention and response activities, with 11 members. The team operates under her coordination and is voluntary, self-funded, and self-reliant, mobilizing resources and equipment from its members to maintain its operations.

When the floods occurred in October 2024, the team was activated and participated in activities to support people before, during, and after the disaster. This is the first model of its kind in the entire province's Red Cross system and is an effective operational model highly appreciated by the Provincial Red Cross Society and the District People's Committee.

The total value of activities carried out by the Le Thuy District Red Cross Society from 2023 to the first quarter of 2025 reached nearly 21 billion VND, through which thousands of vulnerable people have received support and assistance. Many programs, campaigns, and movements have been effectively implemented by the society...

As the Deputy Head of the District's Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign Steering Committee, she successfully advised on and organized 6 voluntary blood donation drives in 2023 and 2024, receiving over 2,500 units of blood, achieving 135% of the target set by the Provincial People's Committee. Simultaneously, she directly participated in blood donation to save lives and pioneered the registration for organ and tissue donation after death/brain death, receiving a registration card from the National Organ and Tissue Bank in 2024.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham said that, out of empathy for students, during the summer of 2024, she implemented the initiative "Brilliant Summer, Nurturing Dreams," sending talented students to free classes and clubs in the area, such as swimming, drawing, football, music lessons, etc., and has achieved some noteworthy results.

Teacher Ngo Mau Tinh, Vice Principal of Lam Thuy Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School, shared: "For over 10 years working alongside Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, President of the Red Cross Society of Le Thuy District, I have witnessed a small woman with a big heart. From the impoverished countryside of Le Thuy to remote areas, her footprints are deeply imprinted on every charitable journey. The connections she has quietly and persistently made with humanitarian groups across the country have opened paths of hope for countless unfortunate lives."

“Out there, there are surely many others silently dedicating themselves. But I believe that, in the symphony of love and compassion, the people of Le Thuy will always remember Ms. Tham as a living symbol of kindness—the one who ignited and spread the flame from the heart, so that the volunteer movement here not only shines brightly, but also remains warm and enduring through the years,” said teacher Ngo Mau Tinh.
